Okay. . .I had not made a cake in a while so I thought I would make something simple and easy to take to work. Well I threw together an 8in white w buttercream filling, covered it in fondant and put a simple bow on it. Nothing major. I walked in to the office and and immediately was bombarded with questions. How did you get the icing so smooth, oh wow, it looks perfect, I'm afraid to cut it, yadda, yadda, yadda. As I started to explain fondant and all that, a coworker walked around the corner and says, "Don't eat it!". We all laughed it off at first and she said, "No seriously! Fondant is disgusting! I know this because I have been making cakes for years and refuse to use it." And goes on to say that she would at least pick the fondant off before eating it. I immediately jumped in! I cannot believe the nerve of her. I let them know that although fondant is not for everyone, it is very good and they should try it. You'd have thought that I laced the fondant with arsenic! Come to find out she sells her cakes as means of extra income. Good for her but why did she feel the need to rant about my little morsel of goodness? Needless to say my disgusting cake was gone in 30 minutes and folks were asking for seconds! What was the purpose of this??????Really.
I already know the answer!!! She's jealous and knows she can't match my mad cake skills! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Laughing Inside,
Elle
Extremely Rude! I'm just curious what fondant you used? She may have never heard of anything other than Wilton fondant......and honestly, I wouldn't give that to my worst enemy!
Well, I'm glad your coworkers liked it!
Satin Ice. The cake was great. Everyone loved the flavor making her look even more ridiculous! Today she brought a bunch of pictures of her cakes and a price list. Said she wanted a few more people to see what she could do. She does a good job. It almost felt like she was trying to one up me which is not necessary as I am only a hobby baker. She stopped me later in the hall and said she had made a few cakes for other coworkers and asked what my plan was by bringing one of MY cakes to work. I said. . ."To eat it!" Why else would I bring a cake to work? I have no interest in "stealing her current or future clients". She needs to back off! I think I'll bring a cake to work once a week from now on just to spite her!
Elle
Funny famous! I am sure that crow tasted a lot like the infamous Wilton fondant!
Elle
man ppl are rude. even if you were selling cakes what does it matter if you bring one to work. she does not own the place or the rights to be the only baker there. if someone wanted one of your cakes instead that would be their choice. some ppl just dont make any sense. and i say yes bring a cake every week. i just wish i could be a fly on the wall and see her face with every cake lol.
Okay, I am awful. . .I am going to bring a cake, cookies or cupcakes every week! She has been passing around her "portfolio" since this am making sure that everyone sees it (which I don't have a problem with) but she's now made a copy of her price list and an order form and is handing it out to each and everyone of us with the EXCEPTION of ME. This is killing me ! Then it dawned on me. . . I wonder if she's a member of CC?????? HaHaHaHa. Oh well, I'm humored. I guess I shouldn't poke fun, maybe she's desperate for $$$??? I felt like I was being featured on Throwdown wih Bobby Flay! Hey look hobby baker, I can do way better than you! HaHaHa
Elle
Ok, if you want to be ulgy, and I hope you don't, ask her if she's LEGAL!!! Make sure to ask in front of your coworkers!
I'm just teasing, don't do that!
This reminds me of something I experienced once, except with church.....I have actually seen pastors get upset cause someone started coming to our church that was in their "AREA"! What? We're not enemies working against each other. Shouldn't you be happy they are going to church? Everyone has a choice of where they attend or if the attend church! And we certainly have of choice of who we buy and eat a cake from!
Her desperate attempts to get everyone's attention onto her cakes and not yours is extremely pitiful! I almost feel sorry for her. Almost! I guess I should say ignore her but that's not too easy is it?
*Update* So, I have been bringing a cake weekly as I said I was going to. Every week I ask one co-worker to choose flavor and style. (I am soooo tired of my clay extruder right now.) She has yet to take one bite of any cake I have taken! (My feelings are not hurt) She always has something to say about whatever it is that I brought that day. Last week. . . I don't care for BC, this week. . . I don't like IMBC. I finally asked, "Then what do you like?" She says, "I only use cream cheese." I said, "Oh, okay well maybe next week I'll bring one with cream cheese icing." She smiled. Later today a gf from the office calls and she overheard "Miss Thang" talking smack. she said' "That has got to be the gaudiest cake I have ever seen! It looked dry and looked like a 5 year old iced it." I think this is hilarious! What's her point? She makes good looking cakes. I will say that we have a very different style. (She is more on decorating with bc roses and the type and I couldn't make a bc rose if my life depended on it!) I have been very entertained by this whole charade! Now the girls are arguing who gets to pick the next cake! Bet she loves that! I am not gonna let her nasty attitude or insecurities stop me from sharing something I love.

I have found that the people that talk down fondant the most are the ones that have never tried working with it and are afraid of it. I personally don't care for the texture of it. I'm a buttercream girl when it comes to eating cake, however, I love decorating with it because there are just too many things that you can't duplicate in buttercream. I find a lot of people think it tastes nasty because of people like that. I always tell my brides if they have never eaten it, I'll make them a sample cake (so they get the full effect) and then they can make an informed decision. I think you hit the nail on the head, she's jealous of your talent!

I forgot to link the picture of this gaudy, dry, 5 year old iced cake.

You keep taking those cakes!!! I think she is jealous, otherwise she would be happy to talk decorating with you and would love to eat your cake! I would!!!!
You have a great attitude! Don't let her change that!!!! She just doesn't play well with others!
Your cake is very pretty ! Even if she sells cakes ..wouldnt you think she would bring in a few samples now and then for coworkers to taste ?? She must think your cakes taste better too !! way to go, keep up the good work !!

OH MY !!!!!!! what a gaudy 5 year old's cake!
Since she doesn't want her slice...can I have it???!
yea yea ask her if she's legal..do it ..that'd stick a bee in her bonnet. I thought I read somewhere that you can't legaly do cakes in a home kitchen in tx..of course I may be totally wrong on that. I LOVE that you are bringing in cakes once a week that is awesome! BTW your cake that was "iced like a 5 yr old" is OUTSTANDING!!! Tell her "I don't do BC roses becasue they are sort of ..well old school"
We all know they arn't but she DOES NOT need to know you can't do them, plus it'd be nice to knock that misrable jealous cow off her pedestal.
Tales like these remind me of when I worked in an office of all misrable, jealous grouchy women...and more to the point why I no longer work in an office
Tell her "I don't do BC roses becasue they are sort of ..well old school"
I LUV this!

omg, show me a 5 year old who can do that (well i'm sure there are some hehe) and i'll sign up for lessons! that woman is way over jealous and Very insecure. you've done all you can to reassure her and she's maintained a hostile work enviroment between you and your coworkers. if she continues to or increases her hostile behavior it may be necessary to seek a conference with a supervisor though i fear his/hers soluton would most likely to be no more cakes
....ask her if she's LEGAL....
Not a bad idea at all. From what I have read here on CC, it's complicated/difficult to get "legal" in Texas, and varies from county to county. Personally, I'd like to know her answer.
She sounds like a jealous shrew. I can't imagine that she'd be a member here, because we are all so supportive of each other. I'd love to try some of your cake! The pink one with hearts is so cute!
There is an old saying "kill her with kindness" so....since you are planning to make a cake every week to take to work, I think you should find out when her birthday is, and make a special birthday cake for her, with cream cheese icing. I bet she would have to eat a piece just to not look like the hateful witch she has shown herself to be so far. But make sure she doesn't just take it home, make sure the whole office eats it!
eat it 2s! it's all yours! I really just smile through ths. I find her behavior soooo silly! She sells her cakes, i don't. It's just a hobby, something i love to do. I don't want to compete with her, I don't want to steal her customers. BTW she isn't legal, not that I care, I wouldn't turn her in. I'm not tooting my own horn but she's jealous of my mad cake skills. HAHAHAHA I'm not gonna stop sharing my cakes with friends because she has a problem with it! She needs to get over herself! It's too bad that she can't be happy to share with a fellow "cakie". I LOVE TO! I'll keep updating the saga! I wonder if she's a cc member? Maybe I'll ask. My DH said to ask for her cream chees tips and ideas. She'd probably have a stroke!
Elle
Omigosh! Your cake is soooo cute! Why is there someone like this at every workplace. Sheesh. Keep up your great cake deco skills.
Hugs,
Diana in VA
this is great! It sounds like she is really insecure with her talents or is frustrated with the fact she isn't getting any orders from work and doesn't want to be compared with anyone (in case she comes out on the wrong end!)
Well you always get more flies with sugar than with salt
So keep bringing in your desserts, why would someone order from her if they can get a sample of your delicious creations once a week!
Too bad for both of you though - I love having a cake-friend at work, we even carpool and can talk cake all day long when we get bored with our computer jobs
WEll, Your "nasty dry cake" was so ADORABLE!! There's some one where I work who has the same sydrome as this woman you are talking of! It's called JEALOUSY!!! So, keep having fun with it! There's nothing wrong with treating your co-workers to your tasty hobbie. Plus you need to stay in practice....use it or loose it!!!
First, AuntieElle, your cake is beautiful and adorable! ( And obviously iced by a VERY TALENTED 5 year old!!! )
I'm enjoying your ongoing story here very much. It's better than a soap opera. Can't wait to see the next episode ( I mean, comment)
BTW, These comments from her sound EXACTLY like my 13 year olds snarky conversations with her friends. Replace cakes with boys and clothes---same thing. ( I'm hoping they all GROW OUT OF THIS)
Keep up the good work-----Please!!!!!
Does anyone else think i's really weird that she hasn't brought in a cake during this whole ordeal? If I were trying to drum up business, that's the first thing I'd be doing. Maybe she's not as good as she claims...Maybe (dare I even say it???) she faked her portfolio?!?! I mean, wouldn't that just be the epitome of pathetic? Poor woman. It sounds like she's very insecure even if she is a great decorator.
I think the "kill her with kindness" routine might actually work, though. What if you ordered one of her cakes to share with the office? If you ordered it and paid for it, you'd still be the sweet one, she'd come off looking bad because you've been bringing in free cake to share with the office every week while she had to be paid to even make one, and you're trying to help her with her struggling business. Plus, you'd be able to see if her cakes really were SOOOO wonderful and beautiful and all that. Haha.
Oh my God that is an adorable cake! You and your Mad Cake Skills!
This is cracking me up!!
I think you should now SKIP a week, and then have somebody ask her to bring in samples...since they'll be missing their weekly cake. After all, you shouldn't judge a book (portfolio) by it's cover. Or you could ask for her help (to learn those bc roses lol) ~ that's the old Ann Landers method of making friends. In the end it really would be fun if you could be cake-crazy together.
TIME OUT FOR AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE...
I just followed the link above to NancysFancy website and..and... there she is! The Cookie Goddess from Amphora Bakery! You MUST go see her work ~ it will blow you away! Nancy ~ you have the most amazingly creative and fun cookies the world has ever seen!!
