I was asked to do a wedding shower cake for a woman in one of our field offices who is leaving this Monday to Hawaii to marry her high school sweetheart... I searched the pictures on here and saw one done by Ginger08, so I used her idea but put my own details to the cake .. credit of course for the idea goes to her!

The bottom tier was a 14" round 3" thick done in chocolate kahlua flavor. The second tier was a 12" round 3" thick done in pina colada flavor. The tiki hut was done in white almond flavor. I iced the cake in buttercream icing then covered it in the MMF. Bottom 2 tiers were done in blue tinted MMF to represent the water ... I made a lot of seashells with fondant (tylose added) and painted each with non-toxic chalk then dusted with a little dry luster dust on each .. I put graham cracker crumbs around the base of the cake then layed the seashells on top of that... the tiki hut was also covered buttercream icing first then in MMF which I tinted in brown and rolled a little avocada green in to give a bit of marble shade into the brown... I rolled tons of little strings and just placed side by side all around the hut ... I built the tiki hut out of an 8" round cake, one layer was 3" thick the next layer was 2" thick .. on top of that I place some 6" layers and the top was a 4" layer up to a 2" layer to get the roof effect ...

I used push in dowel rods that I cut leaves in dark brown (from the Wilton gumpaste kit) and pressed onto the dowels .. I used the holly leaf cutter and cut the top of the palm tree and stretched them out some while the MMF was still really soft .. I attached these to the top of the dowels .. I didn't have any time left to dry them out first where they'd stick out more so they kind of flopped down lol ... everyone there still knew what the were icon_smile.gif

This was a lot of work!! I had so much fun with it icon_smile.gif But I think it came out ok .. not nearly as professional looking as I had wanted it to come out though .. my tiki hut has a bit of a mushroom look lol .... constructive criticism is welcome!!

Thanks for your comments... I'm my own worse critic ... I see so many things I could have changed or done differently .. she did love it and no one could believe the hut was cake too ... so many people didn't want to see it cut but was glad I did when they taste the cake lol icon_smile.gif

Beautiful work!! I love it.

Not sure if I'd have the time needed that goes into this but it would be great for our Survivor theme we're doing for Halloween. How long did it take you?

And if you don't mind me asking, how do you do the pina colada flavored cake?

I used the recipe from the Cake Mix Doctor cookbook for the pina colada flavor .. the only thing I didn't do was add the toasted coconut on the top of the cake the recipe called for as I had to cover it with fondant .. I know the recipe used a yellow cake mix and called for about a 1/3 to 1/2 cup of cream of coconut, a small can of crushed pineapple (drained) and rum... the cake did take some time to do .. I made the seashells at the bottom a week or so before the shower .. the cake itself, I baked ahead of time and froze... I started the tiki hut on Monday morning then finished it that evening after teaching cake decorating classes ... I came in from work Tuesday then started on the bottom 2 tiers... I would think I put in about 6-8 hours total in decorating just the cake part, that isn't counting the time for the seashells .. I'm not a fast decorator lol

Me either. lol Thank you! That cake sounds yummy. Maybe I can just do a take on the hut itself, we won't need a lot of cake.

That's a good idea Ironbaker ... just the tiki hut part would feed probably 12-15 people (maybe more) easily.

cake2decorate, I had so much fun with this one... I sat and worked on the seashells for hours just trying different colors out ... now that I have my cake room all set up, it's hard to get me out of there! lol
