i would love to start to learn how to cake decorate but even on the most basic of websites it always starts with "Once your cake has cooled begin to ...." I want to know THE CAKE. What kind of cake tdo you use? On Ace of Cakes on Food Network Duff (the head chef) is always carving away at stacked cakes but i just dont know what cake everyone is using. If anyone could fill be in on the RECIPE OF THE BASIC CAKE NEEDED FOR DECORATING. that would be great. thanks!!!!!

Welcome to Cake Central. Most cake designs can be done with almost any cake recipe. Some people use boxed mixes, they customers prefer them, too. Others use scratch recipes.

The carving cakes are typically a more dense cake, like pound cake.

The best thing to do is pick a cake book and start with a basic yellow cake or a chocolate cake recipe and see how it goes for you. Not every baker gets exactly the same results from the same recipe, at least at first.

Or pick a mix and give it a whirl. Once you find cakes you can bake that you like to eat, and can get consistant results, you are ready to start learning to make icing and decorate.

The best plan is to find a Wilton Method class near you. Check Craft and hobby stores, they often sponsor the classes. They will give you the basics.
