I'm making a birthday cake for a co-worker on Thursday. I have a 9 inch round cake. The recipe I'm following calls for 2 2-inch layers. That seemed a little small so I made another batch. I now have 4 2-inch layers. And each layer isn't competely 2 inches. I'm thinking of using 3 of the layers. There will be froting in between each layer. Plus a truffle on top for each person. Will a 9-inch round cake, 3-layers with each layer about 2 inches give or take, serve 11 people?

Yes!

Of course you need to make sure the person serving the cake (you?) doesn't cut giant slices, but that size cake should be plenty for 11 people.

According to wilton, a 9 inch, 2 layer cake should serve 24. Now I know that their slices are small, but if you double the slice size, you should have 12 servings. But I am always for more cake, so three layers would work too!

absolutely!!! Being that it will be nearly 6 inches high.....they will probably only eat a 1-1and a half inch thick slice!! That's more than enough servings!

According to the Wilton cake guide it should. An 8" serves 25 and a 10" 39.
So depending on how large they cut the peices, should be no problem. Hope this helps. Chrysb

I think it should be plenty. I bake 2 8x2" cakes and torte each one (so I have 4 layers approx 1"). After filling the cake it makes a rather tall and full cake. We have 13 people in our office and there is always cake left.

i think a 3 layer 9 inch should be ok. the slices might be a little thinner, but i think you could serve 11 people with that, unless the people you are serving it to LOVE cake and are expecting large slices! icon_lol.gif

I'm not the brightest thing on 2 feet right now. I agonized over how high the cake box should be because I didn't know how high the cake would be. It never occured to me that 3 2-inch layers equals at least 6 inches. And of course my box is only 5 inches high.
I suppose I could cut and paste a few boxex to make a box high enough? Or cover the cake in wax paper? It'll be in my refirgerator until I leave and it's only a hour to work.
what do you think?

a double layer 9 inch cake can be cut into 12 or 14 slices. 12 slices is a nicer slice but 14 slices isnt too bad a slice either. so you wont have to make 2 cakes next time.
