In the 3 minutes between me setting up the wedding cake, then carrying in the slabs for cutting up and grabbing my camera, someone poked it! icon_mad.gif
I'm not too mad really, it was at a child's height so I'm thinking it was a kid...or just a dumb grown-up icon_lol.gif
I fixed it as best I could with no tools with me...but I wonder what the guests thought of me washing my hands and then poking the cake flat with my fingers, lol! icon_lol.gif Oh well!

Couldn't get it to attach, but here's the link!

People need to keep a better eye on their kids. icon_confused.gif I wouldn't bet it was a little kid either, at my sister's wedding the kid I was fighting to keep away from the cake was like 10 and he almost knocked it over. Of course that was also the kid eating the candy that was on the floor at the dance. icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif

I love kids.

But I would have been ready to rip the fingers off of that one! icon_evil.gif

Your cake looks beautiful though! Poke and all.

The cake is ver gorgeous!!!! I love the design. I'm sorry to hear about the "finger" incident. I'm always checking on my kids when I go to weddings and such, but not all parents do the same. I saw parents letting the kids do what they want because they were not at their house and thinking it's not their problem!!! what the ****!!!!!

Sorry for that, but at least the cake is very amazing!!!!

Great looking cake!!!

I'd want to poke my finger in it too, lol...yum!!!!

I'm glad they didn't do any worse damage than that, though.

Did anyone say anything to you? Like the couple??

Your cake is beautiful. And as the decorator I would have been upset too.

I actually have a funny story. My father-in-law is a master wedding cake poker!!! I didn't know this until after our wedding but at every wedding he has gone to for the last 20 some odd years he has gone up and taken a little tiny swipe of the cake with his finger. He's a master at it as he has never been caught and he only takes a tiny swipe. I laughed but also told him that if any of the bakers knew he did that they would be furious and sometimes the bride!! He looked at me and said, "you didn't." So true, I didn't even notice the swipe in my cake.

did the bride knwo that one of her guest poked it? I'd hate for her to think that you delivered her a cake that had damage. I would let her know that it was her guest and that a $$$ had been put on their head...

I had a wedding in which I didn't do the cake, but I did the buffet. Kids were running in circles around the cake table! One lady was trying to corral all of them but with very little luck. Then they started running up to the buffet table and stopping themselves by grabbing onto the edge of the table before they slammed into it! I went over to them and "reminded" them that "....we can't run to the food table because I have open fire under those pans and someone could get hurt!"

Later, during the opening remarks, I walked over to these same kids who were playing in the coolers that held the soft drinks and "suggested" to them in my softest mom-voice "guys....it's probably not a good idea to spit the ice back into the cooler because people are putting that ice in their drinks. Let's put the lids back on for now, ok?"

My kids may think I'm a tyrant when we're at a function, but at least my kids aren't spitting ice back into the main ice supply!

You know, this always freaks me out. I have a cake for this Saturday with 325 servings and I'm setting up 5 hours prior to the dinner. I am so so so so afraid someone is going to mess with that cake- unintentionally of course. icon_surprised.gif I'm thinking about asking the bride's mom if a tactful sign on the cake table may be appropiate - something along the lines of "Please allow Katie and Josh to truly enjoy their wedding day but NOT poking/touching their cake".

Have Miami CSI analyze the finger "print" for DNA, then you can
have that person arrested and thrown in jail for life. This is a "Cake Crime"..

Unfortunately uncivilized people still exist out there. icon_biggrin.gif

It could have been kids, but I really don't put it past adults. I have watched more adults touch my cakes or displays at Michaels, when I am doing a demo. than kids. Most kids keep their hands to themselves.

I had a woman pick up a cupcake this weekend during the demo looking at it. I just wanted to say "Woman, get your hands off it." Then after she returns the cupcake to the stand she goes over to my display (just brought it to the store that day) and runs her hands over it. I noticed later when I moved it one of the bird's wings was broken. icon_sad.gif Wasn't at the store more than a few hours before someone does something to it! icon_mad.gif

I'm sorry this happened to you. I know how annoying and frustrating it is!

I think i was deprived (sp) as a kid w/poking holes. Cause it has always irritated me when kids do this. Even before i started decorating cakes. My thing was, why the heck are parents are letting their kids get close to the cake? WHY OH WHY?? i have 3 kids of my own and they know better then to go near a cake. icon_twisted.gif My family is full of kids all different ages, i'm always keeping an eye out for the smallest ones. LOL how dare they ruin my creation?!

and yes, your cake is hot!! looks so yummy too.

Funny, but not so funny story...

This past spring I went to my cousin's wedding. While I was visiting my 3 year old slipped away from me. I found her a few minutes later with about 6 other kids all with their fingers pointed at the cake. Luckily they didn't touch the cake, but just the site of all those kids ready to dig into the wedding cake was priceless.

I'm so very sorry this happened to you! Why is it that people feel they need to touch a cake? You don't go up and touch the meatloaf do you? Heck no!

The more cakes I deliver the more I see it happen! I have only done one wedding cake (and a guest stood there and watched me set it up from beginning to end), but I have done tons of kids birthday parties...you know where this is going, right? 20 sets of fingers to contend with! UUUGGGHHH! icon_cry.gif WHY? WHY? WHY???? Especially when you say "It's all edible"...that is like screaming "TOUCH IT, TOUCH IT"!!!!

Your cake is really beautiful. I would be proud...poke and all!!! I feel pretty bad for the bride too...all of her pictures of her wedding for eternity will have that poke mark. I am sure she will look up the kid who did it and poke him one in the nose herself!!!!

I had this happen to me this summer.....although I had left the reception site by the time it happened...thank god! The bride's mother just said it added to the charm of the day....me.....OH NO....no charm in a finger poke....I'm a former teacher and make no bones about telling kids to stay away from me or the cake while setting it up.

aw man and he just had to go and poke the front too huh??? Couldn't make the poke in the back??? It's just amazing how many people DON'T think about the bride or groom on the wedding day and about making their day as nice as possible - we've all heard those "sabatoge" stories and finger pokers and people doing all sorts of things......

It's also nice to know that some CC'ers out there ARE good parents! There ARE some left! Now if we could just stop the idiots from breeding.... icon_twisted.gif (just kidding!) tapedshut.gif

Your cake is very Gorgeous, and I think some people are just rude and then there are some that just want to poke it to see if it's real. When I do cakes for events at work it never fails the cake gets messed up before being cut. One time the icing was completely rubbed off on one side, curious thing is though it seems like it's the same lady always standing around the desert table when it happensicon_smile.gif

OMG, those are some funny stories! icon_lol.gif I don't think the poke was too noticeable after I fixed it, but what if I hadn't gone back for a picture! I didn't see the bride & groom, as the reception was in full swing by the time I delivered the cake icon_sad.gif I hope they liked it!

why DO people poke the cake though? is it to get that "forbidden" little swipe of icing? Maybe we should bring some cups w/ spoons in them and a little bit of icing and just hand them out to satiate everyone before the cake is cut.... - put your fingers in the icing in the cup - not on the cake!!!

I think some of the poking is simple curiousity combined with bad manners. People look at these cakes and wonder exactly what is that frosting like. Fondant is really different looking than the stuff that come out of the can. If you add quilting, stenciling or a bit of lusterdust and you have something that is totally outside of most peoples experience. It is sort of a "Is that a real cake?" thing. Perhaps you you should add a small poking cake to your orders. Like the smash cake.

I think it's just human nature. I, myself, have a hard time remembering not to touch sculptures and paintings in museums, for example. It's just natural to want to reach out and touch something that is so visually beautiful. I think we just naturally want to get all our senses involved.

I used to have a painted clothing business back in the '90's, when painted shirts and outfits were all the rage. I would work all day creating 25 or so outfits, and they'd be lying all over the the house on shirt boards, to dry overnight. INVARIABLY, friends and neighbors would come over, rave about the designs, and poke a finger into the wet paint while asking, "Is it dry yet?" Arrrrgghhhhhhhh!

The little kids were FAR better at keeping their hands off than the adults were.
