Well, I'd say if you don't count the hours of research... the collar and pockets took around an hour to paint and shape, then the day of assembly, the usual time for baking, then the paint job and actual assembly took about 3.5-4 hours. That's a lot for a sheet cake if I do say so myself!! Considering that the assembly part was me laying the pocket, collar, buttons, and tags on top!! haha! Actually, I would say the paint job took around 3 hours, then a short break, and the button making and final assembly took around a half hour. The sad part is that I would do it again in a heartbeat! I just bonded with this cake!! I love him! icon_lol.gif Maybe it's because we spent so much TIME together!!! icon_lol.gif

Ok, guys... I don't believe I did it, but you guys were so convincing, so I actually submitted it to American Cake Decorating magazine!! Now I feel like a tard like they are going to write me back and say, "Yes, that's nice little girl, but we only publish cakes by people with actual talent... does your Mommy know you're on the internet?"

Oh, no, I don't seriously think I am a talentless hack, and I am not fishing for compliments, but I always feel like I am not as good as the ones I see in magazines. But... what if this one is? What if they actually say yes? OMG... that thought just hit me. What if I could open a magazine and show people a picture of MY cake? I know a lot of you here can do that, and I humbly bow to you... that has to be the coolest feeling!!

So, I'm going to bed...but you know I'm not going to sleep! icon_lol.gif

OH WOW! I was so impressed with just the COLLAR of the shirt last week, I couldn't wait to see the finished product! SO COOL! I hope it makes it into the magazine. It's incredible. Now, I have been told you do it once for a low price for "practice" then the price goes up. Don't you DARE do that thing again for $40 or I will pack up the rest of the CC girls to come to Iowa and kick your hiney! (I have family in smaller towns in Iowa-I know right where Lost Nation is!!)

YIPE!!!! *locking doors, turning off lights, peering nervously through windows*

My mom showed it to a co-worker who said her dad would love that for his b-day and I should save a certain date for it... I told her I wouldn't even discuss it for a dime under $50, but most likely more... that would depend on if I was able to perfect the technique with some shortcuts like a stamper to make the squares, etc. That would be so much easier!! She's not talking about needing it until next spring, so I have time to decide on it! icon_wink.gif

Melvira - I know, I know, plenty of people have already told you. But I've got to say it, too. THAT CAKE IS INCREDIBLE!!!

How long do you have to wait before the magazine contacts you? OMG!!!

Hey Marie, don't curb your enthusiasm just because someone else has already said they like it!! Like most people, I love to hear from everyone, even if their feedback is about something they aren't crazy about. (I write those names on a list and TP their houses!! KIDDING!!!)

Anyway, I have no clue how long it will take to get any response. I assume they would contact me before using a pic of mine just to let me know they are going to, and I am sure I would have to sign all sorts of papers to say I won't sue, etc. I am cautiously excited, but I think I might just try to forget about it for now because it could take a while. (Yah, cuz I'll be able to just put it out of my mind... icon_confused.gif )

So, fingers crossed... I would just love to show the In-laws that this is actually a prestigious career, not a hobby!! You'd think doing MIL AND SIL's wedding cakes within 14 months of each other would clue them in? But no, I am considered to NOT have a job. Ok... raising a baby with special medical needs (cleft lip and palate) AND growing/running a business 'on the side'? UGH! Oops, ranting... that should be in a different thread. Sorry! Only happiness here!! icon_lol.gif

Melvira, Great cake!!! I have been following this forum along and now I know why, my dad's b-day is 10/26 and he LOVES western shirts. I am going to ATTEMPT! to make one.
I have a couple of questions: 1) I will be coloring, not spraying, the fondant so how much do you think it takes. I am using the MMF recipe from CC. I am not sure the size of your cake, mine will be 12/18. 2) How do you make the fondant smooth on the corners down the side of the cake? Don't you have excess? I have got the covering of round cakes under my belt, kinda.lol
Thanks so much for reading and answering...you give me inspiration!!

Hey Sugarlaced!! Very exciting that you are going to make a western shirt... that is one of my next shirts that I want to make, I have a great picture in my head and really want to see if I can do it for a special person who loves western shirts!!

This cake was an 11"x15" and I just used my regular fondant technique to cover it. No special tricks really. Just trim away any of the extra. The color amount depends totally on what color and how dark you want it! I would say start with a hefty toothpick full and add until you are happy. I wish I could be more help on that... unfortunately it's not an exact science. The MMF from CC is what I used and it works so well. Don't forget to add a little Crisco to make it work better! icon_wink.gif If you have any specific questions, feel free to let me know!! Greatest of luck to you!

Now I'm sorry I cancelled my sub to ACDM, I want to see your cake when it is published in there! If they don't publish it, then I'll feel really justified in cancelling the sub.

It is a great cake, and my mouth fell open when I read how you painted all of that. I love that cake! Janice
