Have you ever noticed that the boxes labeled 10 x 10 x 5 are too small to actually fit a 10" cake board? I don't understand this! I was trying to get a small selection of boxes together since I have a bunch of "thank you' cakes to make and then I realized I would be needing them....

So I went to Party America hoping to find a deal (Michael's and the cake supply store are a bit steep!) So thank goodness I had my trusty purse-tapemeasure. They won't fit....so if I want to make an 8" cake I need a 10" board and a 12" box...is that right?

Please oh please let me know if I am missing something.... I want to be enlightened. icon_lol.gif Also, their 6" cake boards measure exactly 7".

So my confusion just gets worse..... I like to make a very tall 4.5" high six inch cake and wanted to find boxes for these. Is there a place where you can get them for cheaper without paying a fortune or is that just part and parcel of the cake decorating business?

And if I am making that 8" cake do I put it on an 8 " board to frost, etc. and then on a 10? Because if I just use the 8" there is no room for the border and if I use the 10", getting the edges smooth is harder, but do able. (and thats what I have been doing).

I really need to take a class called "Cake Boxes & Boards 101".... in addition to "How to Mix Colors"..... icon_lol.gif they will all be held at "Cake College".

Thanks so much!

for tall cakes, maybe you might want to order cake domes..... here is a website that offers them: www.plasticcontainercity.com

Momlittr....thanks for the link. Sadly I am in the teal colored area icon_cry.gif and that is zone 8 so it says that for every 150 pieces, it would cost me $17+ icon_eek.gif But their prices on gold foil board are really good..... and I am loving the domes! I just can't afford them with the shipping.

Wow do I wish I lived in the gray area.... thank you icon_smile.gif

Just wanted to say again what a cool site that is! I may have to figure a little something out.....if I don't order a 'case' of anything because if the case has 300 widgets then I have to pay $34, right? Just wanting to make sure I didn't misunderstand the shipping directions. icon_smile.gif

Truthfully I have not ordered from them, yet, and had not looked at the shipping, on that there is a minimum order of $25. If I ever get busy enough, will order. Think the food store bakeries would sell us some?

That is a good idea! A great idea..... some of the bakeries are so nice and some of them are just plain icon_mad.giftapedshut.gif . There is a freight store.... not really sure what to call it but everything is overpriced and then 1/2 off and there is the most funky variety of restraunt supply, medical equipment (seperate aisles icon_lol.gif ) and all this funkiness but I have gotten some really cool stuff but I haven't been in a while... if it wasn't a Friday, I would go but Fridays are so ugly on the freeway....... I try no to leave from 2:00 - about 7:00 unless I have to.

Hmm... If you are doing an 8" cake, you're right, you need a 10" board, but you should be able to fit it into a 10" box. It should be a snug fit - I've always used the same diameter box as board. Hmmm.

Wow...seems like something's off there, to me!

I always buy 8 inch boxes, and an 8 inch board to go in them. 10 inch boards to go in a 10, etc. Guess I've been lucky.

Could it possibly be that the store stocked them incorrectly? You know...like putting the 10's in the 8's spot, etc.?

ok.... this is the truly confusing part. I measured the cake board - 10" then I measured the box across - 10" but when I tried to put the cake board in the box, it wouldn't fit. icon_confused.gif

** When irritated, the 10" cake board makes a surprisingly good frisbee icon_lol.gif

Ok, yeah--that's the 1/8th of an inch or so that the board and wrapping paper take up.

Plus, when the box is actually folded up, I'm sure there's an extra 1/16th or so taken up with the fold...

What a pain! I've trimmed my boards plenty of times to allow for that "crunch" factor, too... icon_cool.gif

I have gotten a couple of my boxes from the cake supply store and from my local grocery store bakery. I have paid between 1.29 and 2.50 for them. One of them was a plastic bottom and a dome top. There was another posting about an online site but I can't find it.

So, not get off on another tangent but is Sam's worth it? I belong to Costco but they use those cardboard shrinkwrapped things. There is a Sam's about 35' away but don't you need a membership? Will they let you look around for free and then if you want to buy anything, you have to pay? And how much is it?

And my last question icon_smile.gif what can you get there (baking wise) that really saves you money? Powdered sugar is only slighlty less expensive at Costco than buying the 2lb bags so I just buy the so I don't have to deal with powder and the mess of storing a ton of it....same with flour. Sugar I can get cheaper the grocery store on coupon and canned fruit fillings (for cherry pie) I get at Smart & Final.

CakeDiva - I'm in the same boat with regard to Sam's (far away) and Costco (close by) BUT, I have read sooo many threads on here about how great Sam's is to buy from. Apparently the bakery has a multi page list of bakery items they will sell - boards (which are wax coated, eliminating the need to wrap or cover), boxes, frosting, decorations, etc etc. that I decided once I've used up my UBER expensive cake boards and boxes that I bought online (shipping charges will KILL YOU) that I'm gettin' me a Sam's membership and stocking up every few months.

I am tempted to take a run to the Sams Club today....4 kids will be accompaning me, though icon_eek.gif . I am not sure if I am up for that but perhaps the promise of a McDonald's icecream cone will buy them off for an hour of calm.........yeah right icon_confused.gif

Here's that link to the Box Store that was on the other thread. I remembered I saved it at home on my favorites and not at work.
http://www.brpboxshop.com/. I can't remember who it was that called them and they changed the quantity because she said she was going to post on CC. Hope this helps!

Yep, I bought from them - the only one I found that didn't charge for shipping, but they didn't have everything I needed, so I wound up paying shipping from Hubert - ugh. I'm going the Sam's route next time.

I buy my boxes from a local paper store and never had any problems with the 10 inch circles fitting in a 10 inch box.

But I do agree, they don't sem to make them tall enough. I have no problem finding 5 inch tall, but sometimes that isn't tall enough. I did pay way too much money for a flimsy box for "doll cake" that was 12 x 12 by 8. I did find heavy cardboard cake boxes at CK Products, so I order from them, and I use the bakery crafts delivery system boxes for my weddings..(I use the same ones over and over again..I love them!! , as the bottom slides out, with a built in cake lifter)

I dont care much for the plastic dome..they are very expensive!

Good luck with the store idea. None of the stores in our area will sell you anything unless you buy a cake..

Sure, its http://www.bakerycrafts.com/

You cannot order online until you apply for an account (you will need a tax id, and a couple of references..) Your first order you have to do over the phone, and once you pay the bill, you can then order online.

If you aren't in a business, I wouldn't be surprised if places like sugarcraft sells them..

Yep, that's what I do. 8" cake, use a 10" board adn a 12" box!

I always use a board that is 2" bigger than my cake, so it's easier to move without knocking borders off and such. I only use the same size board if I'm gonna be stacking cakes, os you don't see the board. And do the bottom border on the top stacked cake after it's stacked.

I find I save money on butter, eggs, hersheys cocoa, fresh fruit for fillings, whipcream and most of all saran wrap and foil. The plus on the foil is it the big 18inch width, which gaurantees it will fit any size cake board in one sheet. Before I'd have to do two sheets and tape the seam down the center.

I do agree sometimes its hard to find places to store it all. I'm trying to convert a bedroom into my cake room.
