Hi,

I have to make a garden cake and she wants cornstalks on it. icon_eek.gif Does anyone have any idea how to do this? Is fondant the way to go? Thanks in advance for your help!

Being a native Texan you'd think I'd know what a cornstalk looks like, but it's been a while and I'm having a hard time picturing one! One possibility, depending on the size you need, would be to use a pretzel stick and put the elongated leaves on with the tip you use for daisy petals, sorry I don't know which # that is. Maybe this helps, or gives you an idea to work with. Janice

I've actually seen a cake that was a cornstalk! Mold your yellow fondant into an eliptical corn shape. Using a knife or other cutter tool, make your "corn kernels". Then, using green fondant, cut into an elongated leaves and use a generic veining tool to make the indentations/veining on the leaves. Layer the leaves on top of the corn BEFORE fondant dries, peeling back the tops to curl back and expose the corn kernels, but still hugging the corn. Using petal dusts, paint over the corn and the leaves to accentuate and vary the colors. Hope this helps!

Depending on what size you want or if you want the cake to look like a cornstalk, I used royal icing and made them on waxed paper then put them on a cake....

OMG, you're kidding???? ~ LOL, thanks for the compliment!
It was a surprise cake for the lady, her name is Mary and I've always teased her about growing a garden..nursery rhyme...her answer was always "It ain't cause I didn't plant one!

LOL sounds like she is as contrary as the Mary in the nursery rhyme! I know she loved the cake!
This would have been a good idea for a FD cake for my stepfather, but I didn't think of it at the time!
Maybe next year, his bd has already passed too!
I put it in my collection for reference later. Janice

Thanks PinkPanther, glad it was of some help for you! It really was fun to do! The dirt is BC w/cocoa powder in it. I think grass around it would have looked nice too, plus making the fence ahead of time with different color. Why is it we can see a better way of doing things AFTER the project is finished??? LOL! Good luck and don't forget to post a picture as we would love to see the finished product!
