I'm sure this has probably been done several times, but what is your favorite crusting buttercream that does not need to be refrigerated?

I typically use the Wilton recipe with 1/2 butter and 1/2 crisco.. But is there anything better???

Here is a recipe that I got from here a long time ago. Sorry, I can't remember who posted it to give them credit. It is wonderful!

Dream Whip Icing

2lbs or 1 kg bag of confectioners sugar
1 pkg dream whip
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups Crisco shortening
2 tsp clear vanilla flavoring
1 Tbsp clear corn syrup

Whip up till fluffy. No need for refrigeration but it is fine in the fridge as well. Tastes great, not so sweet and crusts well.

I made the Dream Whip Buttercream on the weekend. It was very yummy but I found that it did not crust well. I liked the recipe so I will try it again and see what happens.

AngD, I can't make roses icon_redface.gificon_cry.gif They always look like little cabbages, so I give up!! icon_lol.gif But yes, I'm sure you can make roses with it. Maybe someone can tell you for sure.

It always crusted well for me? icon_confused.gif The humidity might have had something to do with it not crusting well, give it another try and let us know if it worked for you.

Has anyone replaced 1/2 of the crisco with butter in the Dream Whip Icing?

denise2484,
Oh my gosh, a cabbage designer after my own heart!
I just now realized by your post, that is what my roses look like!
I thought they looked a little like carnations, but CABBAGES!!! That's mine too.

Vicky icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif I don't think I'm ever going to learn to do a rose! icon_cry.gif To take classes where I'm at... I would have to drive over a hour. I'm stuck trying to teach myself!! icon_lol.gif I guess I need to make a garden cake for my roses so they wouldn't feel so bad!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Hey Kay, I don't know if it would work or not because of the boiling water? I don't if would just completely melt the butter?
