I'd like to start a website with photos, etc. where I can refer people to peek at my cakes.

Without using freewebs or anything like that, how do you go about starting a website? I'd like to do it inexpensively and I've seen sites that say they will help you set up, but I don't know where to start and I don't want to have to pay someone a lot of money to do it if it's at all feasible to do it myself.

I have the website name picked out, I just don't know how to register it or whatever I have to do to get the website going.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have. It doesn't have to be fancy, just a place to view photos thats easy to log on to.

Depends on how important having a direct web address is... I paid $11 per month thru yahoo so I could get www.myactualbusinessname.com rather tah www.geocities.com/bybusinessname, etc....

I am still trying to figure out how to work it though...... I feel like a moron. I am o.k. with html but designing web pages are making me want to drink in the afternoon icon_lol.gif

I used my free 15 mgs. thru geocities and am trying to use it has photohosting only but can't figure it out....

We use the same thing! Use the page builders they make it easy.

I want a direct web address. I don't want people to have to access through freewebs.com or geocites.com.

Is Yahoo a direct web address? Are you the owner of the web address or is Yahoo?

I have heard of people using certain free sites and then when they want to get their own website the name they were using is registered to the site and not to them. I don't want that to happen.

Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, I just don't know how to go about doing this and registering a domain name so it belongs to me.

Thanks!

www.freeservers.com has several levels of membership. The free level requires part of their name in the web address. (I have one for my wedding photos - www.jeffresswedding.freeservers.com.) However, you can sign on for a monthly fee and get your exact business name if it hasn't already been taken. It has a site builder tool that's pretty easy to use, also. I think there's a level of service that even provides email so that you could have [email protected], for example.

I used freeservers to set my site up too. It was easy to use. For a small fee, I think $24/yr they'll remove the advertising from your site. That's what I did because I didn't like all the banners/ads. I'm pretty computer challenged, but even I was able to follow the directions.

Oh, I wanted my own address too. So I just used part of it for my account name. The address ended up being:www.sweetcreations.4t.com.
The 4t seems odd, but it least it contains my business name.

You can get www.yourname.com from Yahoo. I think it is around $11/per month and you can get the domain for $6.99 for 3 years.

I used godaddy.com to create a website for my fiance's fishing charter business. They are so great... superior customer service, and I think I paid $50 for an entire year of website hosting, and an email account. It's so easy to upload information (ex. pictures, etc.). I used Microsoft Publisher to creat it, but they even have tools to create a really fast/easy website. Also, if you go to their website, you can search to find if the name you want is taken. Hope this helps!

You can get your web site and domain name FREE and FREE hosting at Microsoft live. They have a builder, etc, easy to use. I did mine through them, www.artfullyiced.com
http://officelive.microsoft.com/

If you use the basic one, it'll always be free.
Good luck.
