Hi! Hope everyone is having a good day.
I need some tips on working with Marshmallow fondant. I have never done fondant at all - but I want to try to make a light saber for the top of a star wars theme cake.
Anybody with ideas or tips on doing that would be so appreciated.
Thanks!
Coating your work surface with crisco works best.
Also when kneading out the MMF, wear some examination gloves (you can buy non-latex gloves, 50 pair for under $5, at Walmart in the first aid section) and spray them with pam. Your hands won't get sticky at all- handy when you have to answer the phone or the door- just remove the glove and voila a clean hand. Also wears them if you are kneading your color into the MMF, your hands won't get full of coloring this way.
HOT MARSHMALLOW!!! Be very careful when you melt the MM down. I know we all try to be very careful, but over the weekend, when I was taking a bowl of melted mallows out of th microwave, some got in between my wedding band and my finger. I swear I could not get that ring off fast enough. Luckily no damage..but just wanted to add that tip.
Oh yeah..if you use the recipe from here, careful with the amount of Powdered sugar you use. It calls for 8 cups of 10X, and I did my test batch with this, and maybe it was just me, but it was crumbly. When I made it again, and used 6 1/2 cups of 10x, it came out great.
Hope this helps
MOCHA!
I agree with Mocha about the powdered sugar quantity. This is how I do it (BTW I LOVE MMF) 1 cup of MM - I use large marshmallows (10= 1cup), 1 tbsp water, 1 cup sugar add a little more when kneading.
If you need more MMF just increment the numbers equally
2 c MM
2 T water
2 c sugar
I hope I explained well!

These pictures are really helpful.

At first you're going to think it didn't turn out, but keep kneading. It will come together.
Another tip is if you are making the MMF all one color, add your color in after the MM's come out of the microwave. You can then stir in the sugar and your color all at the same time.

Thanks everybody. I think I am going to try to make a batch today and see how it turns out.
Niki 10 - those pictures and info are perfect! Just what I needed!
If the cake turns out cute, I'll try to post a photo.

Thanks for posting that great link. I think it's going to help me get over my "fear of fondant".
Thanks for posting that site. I am trying MMF tomorrow for a 2 tiered birthday cake. Wish me good luck!
