I've been making cakes for going on 7 years now and I have never experienced a cake disaster...until now .
This was a Curious George cake that I was going to make using Kittysparkles ingenious design method (i dont' know what I did wrong!). Everything was going pretty good and I had the monkey all done and the handpainting on the sides, all I needed to do were the borders and finishing touches. So I'm sitting on the sofa 9:30 at night eating popcorn and sipping some champagne...nice little buzz going and I hear this soft PLOP sound; my husband and I look at each other and I say "I know exactly what that was...George!" Sure enough the weight of his head had pulled off the cake and taken the entire corner of the cake with it! I couldn't even panic I just set to work on fixing it...didn't know how I was going to but eventually I achieved success...2 HOURS LATER . Needless to say I was sober in an instant! I'm just glad I didnt' find it that way in the morning...they were picking it up at 11. Here are some photos:
All I can say is WELL DONE!
That is one fantastic patch up job...haha!
What a great finished product! I bet you were REALLY gulping (ER, uh... sipping) champagne after that one was finished.
(Sidenote: Loved your dialogue...so funny!!)
WOW!!!!! How do you save a cake like that!!! You did good at saving your cake I would have just dumbly started over the cake is adorable by the way!!!
Ummm, what a save, fantastic, I don't think I would've been able to pull that off nearly as well. On another note, you cake insides look fantastic, so moist. Do you bake from scratch or box? What filling did you use? Looks so YUMMY
Wow! You are the cake doctor! The cake looks amazing, you really rose to the challenge! Now I know who to PM when I have a cake disaster and don't know how to fix it!!
Discolady,
All I can say is WOW!!!!!!! What a great cake. Nice Job on repair, I would have never recovered from that. Maybe I should take up drinking champagne...LOL.
Yes, it's a great cake and fix job, but I'm still fixed on the champagne and popcorn...
hmmmm, interesting combo!
You are amazing! I would have sat down and cried for at least 30 minutes before I even tried to fix it. You did a great job. The cake is absolutely adorable! You are truly a Cake Diva!!
OMG you really did a great job handling the disaster. I think you did a fab job on the cake. I couldn't tell you what went wrong with the plans. All I can say is your cake turned out beautifully. thank you for including me in your planing on this cake.
That is one cute cake! And you did a heck of a job recovering from your disaster!
Very well done!
Thanks ladies for the nice comments. I really am surprised that I was able to pull this off. Inititally I thought Geez I can't fix this I'll have to call the customer and tell them their cakes a gonner. But then I knew I had to at least try...it was for their sons first birthday! Geez! Maybe the champagne made me bolder!!
You did a marvelous job on the repair and the cake for that matter!!! I love the design.
(PS. your dialog had me ROFL!!)
Great save but that is a heart stopping moment, isn't it? He is darling.
Heart stopping...sobering effect...whatever I hope it never happens to me again
That cake is SO stinkin CUTE!!! I love George!
Had you just posted his cute little mug in the gallery I would have NEVER guessed that he lost his head (sorry, couldn't resist) over the whole thing! You did a great job putting him back together.
Somone else mentioned your cake insides looking good too and I have to agree! Looks delish. You mind sharing if that is a box mix or scratch cake?
Poor George! What a FANTASTIC save job though - you can't even tell. What an adorable finished product - so cute!! Great job! Now sit down, eat bon bons and have that whole bottle of champagne for your trouble! LOL
Thanks guys...I always use boxed...Betty Crocker. And this one was not doctored...it was ultra moist and I think that contributed to the disaster.
I need you on speeddial when I run into a disaster! That was a fabulous job you did. I would've never known you ran into trouble.
Soemtimes I think your adrenalin kicks in and you just get this feeling that you have to try anything to get this cake right! and in some way it comes together...Thank God!
Great job!
OMG!!! I would have sat down and cried! You did a wonderful fix it job! He looks GREAT!
