I recently read a post about adding pudding mix to cake batter. I tried it with a recipe which was not tested yet (just a buttercake recipe). The cake looked ok so I proceeded. I bake another layer of choc. then I noticed that the IMBC is not enough to fill the cake so I used the rest of the FBCT icing I made for the top decorations. When the cake was served it was way too sweet.... (IMO) I heard one comment though.
Do I have to reduce sugar on cake recipes when adding pudding mix? Also, what kind of cake recipe can I add the pudding?
I learned a lot with this one!
I've only heard of adding pudding mix to cake mixes....did you add it to a scratch mix? I don't really know the answer to your question, but here's a bump!
I always add a box of pudding (among other things) to my cake mix. (Duncan Hines) it shouldn't make it any sweeter. I do not add it to scratch cakes! Are you sure it wasn't the icing you were using? Or was it in the cake part itself that you felt it was too sweet? You can always try using sugar free pudding if you just don't like the other stuff. Maybe that would be an acceptable alternative for you!! Let us know how it's going and if we can help any more!
I added vanilla pudding mix to scratch cake without altering the sugar in the recipe... the cake itself is too sweet. I thought it can be added to any cake batter. Didn't thought that it is for cake mix only.
thanks for your reply.
Yah, typically the pudding mix is added to a cake mix cake as a way of making it moist and hiding the 'boxed' taste. I would say if you are doing a scratch cake, you could try adding sugar free pudding and see if that is less sweet!
