Hi guys- my nephew asked me to bake cake(s) for his school's cake walk next friday -ugh I thought maybe it was like in October lol. I did search online for cake walks in general, to see if anyone out there in google/yahoo search land had posted pics of any kind- but didnt find any.

I have a bunch of ideas- but I want to see what my target is for decor/fancy etc- wondering if anyone who has done cake walk cakes could point me to which ones you did for such or post them here or just direct me to which ones in your photos they are. Thanks. I've got a page of ideas already but I have never heard of a cake walk (yeah silly eh lol) even so I dont know what I'm up against.

TIA!

Hey! I would think that any cake you wanted to make would be fine. We are about to have a cake walk at our school and I'm planning on making some Halloween/Fall themed cakes one with a scare crow and another with a ghost on it! But just about anything would work!! Have Fun!!

I have been doing cake walk cakes since my 9 year old was in Kindergarten. I just make any cake. One year it was a lion because we had a safari theme. One year it was a house and I don't remember why. Last year it was a teapot, tea cup and cookies (in my picts) because we live in the town on TEA. This year I am going to try to carve the "T" and decorate it like the schools symbol. Won't hurt to attach a card too! Good luck, I think any of your cakes will do great!

The cake walks I have seen have always been individual pieces of the cake on paper plates. The customers pay their money then go over and chose the piece and then sit down and eat it.

most of the cakes at the cake walk will be made buy people who are not professionals or store bought so im sure you have nothing to worry about definitly make a novelity cake have you seen the cake that looks like a piece of candy corn when sliced its made with the checkerboard pan thats always a big hit.

Ocean's fine-
love the cakes, maria, they're awesome (on your pics)

the nemo pic a friend emailed to me long time ago and I modified it to fit the avatar restrictions. (size) it's just a joke about finding nemo because I'm a sushi fanatic and also I love the movie lol. No it's not a cake however I did a sushi cake last month for my niece lol (cake and icing, not fish and rice lol)

Destini, thanks for posting those pics- I dont know why I didnt find those-

I know anything I do will be 'fine' but well I have tons of ideas and well not that I'm near pro or anything but I want to blow everyone else out of the water LOL

My DS has a cake walk at school for a Fun Day in May. I made four things last year, 2 were cupcakes and 2 were little cakes. Most of the time the cakes are made by people who just slap some icing on and try to pretty the cake up OR store bought. Here is a pic of what I made. Don't laugh. I am just learning. Were are Panthers so I did the famous paw print we have. I tried to make my first BCT but they stuck to the paper so the cupcakes were just done quickly. I wanted to make little paw prints for some of the cupcakes but oh well. Oh and the cake walk we have is so many of the kids stand on a number on the floor then the music plays and stops then a number is drawn who ever is standing on that number is the winner of a cake. And so on for the rest of the day.

cool
well see mis, thanks for posting the pics- I dont know the school's mascot lol.
The carnival theme (fish pond and cow pie bingo and a bunch of other stuff is sort of hee haw theme so I think the fall idea will work- I have tons of farming type ideas.
I love the paw prints

oh and I figure yeah probable now that I've searched and seen a few other pics, some storebought cakes sitting on tables- ugh well I am nowhere near fancy schmancy that you guys are or that I'd lov eto be lol- but I refuse to just put out a plain angel food cake with no frigging icing on there lol. I have the cake bug. I cant just do that LOL

So then there are the gift basket raffle prizes- and they ask for donations- so instead of making a real basket with one of the suggested ideas, i'm going to make a cake basket with 'stuff' in it lol. The other ones well I have too many ideas andd I know I'm not expected to donate any more than one cake but come on. Who are we kidding? @ making just one cake HAHAHAHA

(ok I'm certifiably insane I guess lol)

I was sooooo hoping to be able to do that for my son's school fall festival next month. I thought it would be great advertisement for me. However, I just found out that for his school, the only cakes that can be submitted for anything school related must be store bought or made by someone with a licensed business. icon_sad.gificon_mad.gificon_evil.gif I was NOT happy!!! I have been looking forward to this for a while now and now I can't do it.

When I was a kid we had a cake walk at our school. What we did though was to draw a circle and mark off areas into numbers. The kids would walk around the circle and music would play. When the music stopped we all landed on a number. Then they would pick a number and the one standing on it got to pick a cake they liked. It was sort of like playing muscial chairs.

I don't think this is the same cake walk you are talking about though.

I'm sure any cake you make will be a big hit.

I did two cakes for a cake walk at a local elementary school this past spring. My friend's daughter attends the school and thought it would be great PR for me.

It was my understanding that all but the two cakes I submitted were grocery store cakes. A neighbor told me that her son's school required they be from a store bc if people don't know "where they came from" many people would not participate. Thus, I was sure to attach my business cards to the outside with a full description of the contents (boxes with windows are definately a plus so that they can see the cake, but no one can breathe on it).

I have never posted the pics to CC, but they are on my website. They were simple things that kids would like if they won. So, one Spiderman face and one ladybug cake. I didn't want to go with the fair's theme...I didn't think anyone would even notice anyway. I heard that cake walk's are typically VERY BUSY and people don't really take the time to inspect all the cakes b/c they don't usually get to chose the one they take home.

Good luck...let us know what you decide. Whatever happens, you've made your nephew happy!!!

Our school had a spring fair and the kids had a cake decorating contest. The cakes were judged, then given away at the cake walk. My DD's easter cake in my photos was for the contest and cake walk. One of her best friends won it. Chocolate cake mix, buttercream and tinted coconut with a marshmallow peep on top.

The cake walks at our local elementary school that I work had a cake walk last year. It is done just as joannK said. I worked my butt off making 2 Halloween cakes, a werewolf and a fall scene w/ ghosts, (in my pics) I found out that these cakes only earned about $3 each ( if that) because the teens they had working the booth didn't wait until all the spaces were filled before starting the game and it only cost a quarter to walk. I thought the object was to raise money!
I spoke to the PTO pres. This year I am going to do more cakes but raffle them off instead. I'll sell tickets near the door and the winners will be drawn at the end of the festival.
This way the school will make more money, and I won't feel like I did all that work for nothing.
I felt like if I wanted to donate only $6, I would have just given them the money and saved myself a lot of work.

thanks for all the feedback and sharing your experiences! I really appreciate that. The kids got a handout home with them explaining about the fair. Sort of a carnival thing from 5-7 next Friday. That doesnt sound like a lot of time for a fundraiser LOL. And since I've never heard of a cake walk before, I have absolutely no sense about how this would go except for what you all have told me. I'm going to call the school on Monday and find out more.
My thoughts were especially based on what I saw at our fall fair- and the submissions in the baking category and how I should have submitted something. Anything slapped together would have looked better than what was there. lol seriously and I am not even that good LOL. So I figured after I saw some pics that you guys provided and others I stumbled upon of cake walks Ive seen, it seems like a lot are either storebought or just plain old cakes. And well every cake I do now has to be more exotic than the last (it's a virus, I know it lol- please tell me you all have it LOL)

Anyway sounds like perhaps going all out may not be worth it? We'll see what the school says on Monday. There was no mention of storebought because of hygiene or allergy issues. I wasnt sure how they're displayed- I think it's the pull number out of a hat thing and the kid gets to pick. Musical chair styles- bit confusing though since I really dont know about cake walks lol

I'd love to do a few though in the hee haw/farmer theme. I scored BIG TIME today at garage saling- got me some autumn leaf molds (and about 300 bucks worth of FAB cookbooks for about 18 bucks, and cake tier plates and turn table and lots of other molds and what else lol.

ah well we'll see what I find out. Thanks again for all the comments!
