I am sooo upset. I cannot operate this type of business out of my hame according the Enviromental Health Dept. I guess I did things a little backwards. I called for a business license prior and in my county, I do not need one. However I do have to have a permit for "food service", and need a separate kitchen/range.
Did anyone else have this problem? Did you just do cakes for "friends"?

Where I live you can't do it unless you have a commercial kitchen, as per my cake instructor. You can't actually ask for a set price if you make one for someone but they can give you what they feel is fair. She also mentioned that if you are into making wedding cakes, someone will have to check with the reception hall as to whether you can bring the cake because some places won't take one not made out of a commercial kitch. The reason is that if someone gets sick from the cake, the reception hall (if they served other food besides) is responsible for that person getting sick, not you.

Your cake instructor was honest. My advocated selling from your home and using Wilton pans for profit.

Sorry to hear about this, but is you have to "get what your customers think your cake is worth"...I would do a "suggestion list!

you know something like

cakes to serve 10-15 usually go for....$0.00

cakes to serve 15 - 10...

and so forth...get the idea? Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear that, it really sucks! You all need to move to Ohio.

We've talked a lot on this site about this recently. What I did was this: a friend of mine at church owns a coffee shop that closes after dinner. I rent it from her in the evenings so I have a kitchen. Some churches will let you do the same. Don't give up. We've all found ways to make our addictions legal!
blessings!

StephW, Where in Ohio are you? Go and read the topic "Any other Ohio bakers out there?" and it should answer all your questions. If not, PM me.

Happy Baking!

I am in the same boat - I have heard that I can rent a commercial kitchen, and I'm hoping I can get my business permit that way. Don't give up, maybe if you work with somebody else - they can offer you more advice. Like, many people try to work with their church kitchens, and you know, I have seen a few people post their need to find a commercial kitchen on "Craig's List" and they were contacted by a business willing to help. good luck to you : ) thumbs_up.gif

Yeah it's grazy. The same in colorado you have to have or use a commercial kitchen. For the life of me I can't figure this one out.

You can give your cake away no problem if you make it at home. But you can't charge for it. To me it's all about money making and you can bet your whatever on it it's not our money!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something to think about: If you are in the food business and you don't cover your back you ask for trouble.
