OK if I got your attention, here is my story. I was driving 3 hrs to go to apt with my grandmother, when my sister asked If I would make a cake for her work. I could do whatever I wanted, she just wanted to show off my baking. She took sample of my July 4th cake to work and also had a friend there who wants a cake, since I was coming to town. They wanted both to be WASC cake, but friend wanted chocolate buttercream. I agreed to do this without really thinking about time or money. Told her 10.00 for each cake. (I am not legal and just really wanted to make my supply cost).
Well I have only made a white chocolate buttercream in which I made regular buttercream added melted white chocolate. Well last time I did this bad results. So I found a receipe from Toba Garrett for her Chocolate buttercream. Calls for alot of stuff, ganache, dutch coco, and chocolate liquer to name just a couple. I wanted to try this and thought a good time. Well It was really good, and made a lot. But really expensive. (the liquer was 30.00, thank goodness big bottle, Dutch coco 10.00 not so big box)
My sister wanted just regular buttercream, but thought good time to try the not so sweet receipe. I had just worked 4 12 hrs night shifts, when I had 1 day off and baked the cakes, then went to work wed night and slept three hours on thursday and spent the better most of day making icing and decorating these cakes. I then had to pack carefully, because my cooler was not big enough for both cakes to drive 3 hrs in the back of a truck. Very happy to say they both made it (although I thought for sure my chocolate was going to be a big basket of poop) And everybody at here work loved it. My sister friend did give me 15.00 instead of 10.00, so that was nice. Have not totaled price of supplies yet, but sure this still did not cover it, esp. since I under cooked the rectangle cake and had to remake.
Thanks for listening to me ramble but first time I am 90% happy with what I did. Sure lots of lessons to learn, but pretty happy. Here are my cakes: Rectangle is WASC with not so sweet icing. 3 layers with cheesecake moose 9 x 13. other is 8 in round WASC with cheesecake moose basket weave with lots of royal icing flowers and butterflies. I was very sleep deprived when doing these so they are not my best work. First time I tried butterflies.

well finally got around to figuring my cost, and for these 2 cakes it was a little over 30.00. So I did not even make all my cost back. But everyone loved the cake and who knows maybe I can sell some more when I go to visit. At least know I have written down my cost for WASC cake and couple different types of buttercream, so at least I get my money for supplies. Not really wanting to charge much more anyway, since I am not legal yet. Maybe some year, I can go that route.
