So I was at walmart and saw this wall shelf and thought," That would make the perfect cake stand for this weekend!" I was doing a square cake and didn't have a stand. The shelf was like a shadow box. SO I took it to a glass shop and had them cut me a piece of frosted glass to cover the opening. It was a 12 inch opening and I was doing a 10 inch cake so there was an inch space of just glass between the edge of the wood and the cake.SO....(and this is the creative part )
I got two of those battery operated tap lights and put them inside the box so there was a inch band of lighted glass all around the cake! It was so cool looking!! It's hard to see it in the picture, but here is what it looked like...
"Cool" Doesn't do it justice! This looks absolutely fantastic! (Of course, your totally exquisite cake doesn't hurt the overall effect).
Its WAY cool but I am having a hard time imagining what kind of shelf this is here.... But hey it's awesome!!!
Great cake and nice idea... If you were specifically looking for that there is no way you would have found a stand that even came close to looking like that...
Good work and you are very ingenious, Love it!
Blow your trumpet loud, you deserve to be heard!!
Such a great idea!!!! And I love the way it looks! The cake is beautiful by it self but the stand just adds a little "somethin somethin"

Think of a picture frame on the wall, but really really wide coming from the wall out. OK? Now take it off the wall and lay it on the table. Cover the open area with glass and VOILA! you have a brilliant idea for a cake stand!!
Get it now??
I think it is fantastic, and I love ideas like that.
Please post this in the wedding cake gallery (if you already haven't) so I an add it to my favorites. I love it and yes, you are extremely clever!
love it.... wonderful idea, might have to copy that.... maybe buy them in white and paint them to match the cakes if possible
Love this idea ! especially the lites inside the box. BTW, your cake is beautiful and the monogram is very nice
Great idea...and the cake is beautiful as well!!
It would look so nice in the ambient light of a reception hall with just this nice glow coming from underneath the cake to light it up!
That is really a great idea. I love hearing different ideas for cake stands and ideas to cover boards with.
I totally LOVE it. I'm now on the lookout for some creative cake plates...you got my wheels turning!!!
Thanks for all the compliments!
Okay, okay!! Here is the next one I am going to do... I found this cool fish thing at Kirkland's (?) and I thought it would be perfect cake stand for a underwater themed cake. I am going to make a dummy cake for display because I think a real cake would be too heavy, but picture it at a wedding fair with a beta fish in the bowl and a underwater themed cake sitting ontop of the bowl Cool, huh?!! Wouldn't that be an attention getter!!
wow.... never thought tht one could make such good use of the shelf n now even the fish bowl.... Im surely going on a hunt for creative cake stands... it adds so much to the cake... just love it!!!! thnx for sharing!
SOOOO creative!!!! I love both of your ideas. $19.00 for the fish stand is great compared to the cost of regular cake stands!! Would you mind sharing the total cost for the square box and the glass? Thanks for sharing this. Now I know that everything I look at in stores is going to turn into a cake stand in my head.
In Louisiana, it's called Lagniappe, a little something extra! Definitely added to the overall effect of the cake, very creative thinking!
The shelf was $19.99 at walmart. When I was taking hte sticker off,it said "two piece" shelf on it. There were some smaller shelfs by this one, so Ithink maybe I cheated myself out of a smaller shelf. The glass was $14.oo for 1 frosted piece and one plain piece. They didn't think one piece would be stong enough for a 50 lb. cake. Which the two pieces are going to be great because i am doing a cake that is going to have a mosaic design on the sides and I plan on putting tissue paper between the two pieces of glass in the colors of the cake so when the light shines up, it will be colored like the cake!
Here is a picture of the plain shelf...
