I have been wanting to try fondant after seeing all the neat cakes here. I just assumed that everyone made their own and colored it for all the decorations. Then while in the cake supply store I saw premade fondant in small and large quantities - some even precolored. Then I saw Wilton had some small boxes of neutral colors or primary colors.

So my question is how difficult is it to make your own if you don't own a KA or like type of mixer? Any hints? What is the advantage to making your own (other than cost - which is always less expensive to make your own)? I saw the thread that most like Satin Ice or Fondx.

Then, do you color the fondant or paint the fondant onto the decorations (suggeted by the cake supply store to me)?

I never use my KA mixer for fondant. It is much easier to do by hand.

The Wilton fondant is easy to use, especially for beginners, but it doesn't taste very good to most people. There are other brands that taste better but cost more.

There are several recipes and instructions in the recipe section. You can color the entire batch when you make it yourself. The batch for MMF-marshmallow fondant can be cut into a small batch for coloring, too.

I use Satin Ice brand (Wilton brand tastes nasty IMHO). Although, after how easy pastillage was to make, I am planning on trying my hand at making my own fondant sometime in the future as the Satin Ice is expensive.

I've only made MMF and only about 4 times but it is so easy. When I first start mixing in the PS, I think "what am I doing? this is never going to work!" and suddenly it all comes together. At least when I make it myself, I know exactly what's going in (no preservatives), it's easy to do, and it taste better. Of course, my mind may change when I'm doing a large cake all covered in fondant. icon_wink.gif

I do all my cakes in mmf. I love it and I love the fact that I can control the consistancy of the product. I have covered large 16 inch cakes and have done four tiered weddings with it. I just make sure I make it two days ahead of time. That way I am not so tired, it does take some mannual labor. But it is well worth it and the price is right and it taste good too!
