Would You Buy Them?

I do mostly cakes, but I have done a couple cookie orders as well. One customer has asked for large "W" sugar cookies, decorated in the high school colors of black and red. I don't have a large W cutter, just a small one. I gave her some options, but told her I'd look into the possibility of purchasing a bigger W cutter. The problem is that I would have to buy the complete alphabet set for $9. Would you buy the set, knowing you wouldn't use it very often? Would you charge a fee to the customer to buy the set, or eat the cost? I have seen some posts where they recommend making your own cutter, but I'd prefer not to do that. I'd appreciate knowing what other decorators would do.

My suggestion would be to balance out how much she's paying you for the cookies vs. the cost of ingredients and supplies. Take out the price of the new alphabet set and see if it's still worth it to you, profit-wise.

So I guess that means eating the cost of the new cutters. I don't know that it would be right to directly charge the customer for the set, unless you haven't priced them yet, you could add it in if you don't have a set price list.

OR, just buy the set, and resell it on ebay when you're done! icon_smile.gif

I do know there is a website that you can just buy the letters you want. They were pretty good size cutters...the copper ones and they were pretty decent. My sister purchased a K and D for her wedding for their initials and I made cookies as well as the cake.

I'll do some checking to see where she got them. icon_smile.gif

If the whole set is only $9 and is the size you need, I'd get the set. I can't imagine you'd find just the individual letter you need for less than half that price, plus if you order it you'll pay shipping.

I do remember reading that you can buy a cheap metal cookie cutter and just reshape it to what you need. You could always give that a try and if it doesn't work then get something else.

I'd love to know where she got the cutters. I don't need the cutter for another 3 weeks or so, and she may pick one of the other ideas I gave her.

I bought a roll of aluminum flashing in the roofing department at Lowes yesterday for 6 bucks. It's 10" by 10 feet long, and I plan to use it to make my own cutters from. Any shape I want, sky is the limit!

Have you thought of making a template and just using that? I do that ALL of the time, and only keep the actual cookie cutters I use more often, in my kitchen.

Thanks for everybody's suggestions. I couldn't get on the internet to check the responses until today. I'm going to wait and see what the client decides to do. I have a coupon for 50% one item at Michael's, so I might see if they carry the cutter set.
