My DH got the book Saturday morning at 8am.....started reading from 9am and I only got to see him for lunch and dinner. He finished on Sunday at 1:30pm.

Yes, I think you are right about the spell.

I finished it about half an hour ago. I am lucky I didn't have anything that needed to be done this weekend, other than meals and one shopping trip.

I agree, there must be a spell on the book.

My poor DH tried staying away from the internet and newpapers since Thursday since there was rumour that the book had leaked and that spoilers were posting on the internet. I tormented him telling him I read the ending and kept asking him when I saw him whether he wanted to know what happened.
I have not read the books but I think I will have to, just to find out what all the excitment is about.

Me too! I didn't move off the couch all day on Sunday. Hubby bought two books so we didn't have to fight on who was going to read it first icon_lol.gif . He isn't done so hard to be quiet about it.

I got my book at 2:56 Saturday. I saw the mailman pass by and ran out to get my book. I was soooo afraid it wouldn't be there. My DH was very shocked that I put it down to cook dinner. After church on Sunday, we normally go out to eat but he suggested we go home and eat sandwiches so I could get back to the book. I finished at 1:30. Now I kind of feel sad that it's over. I guess I need to read it again, more slowly this time. Actually, I needed to finish it because I needed to get started on a cake.

My book came at noon on Saturday, while I was making lunch. I ate lunch, started reading, took a short break to get some groceries, continued reading, took a short break to make dinner, continued reading, took a short break to read to the kids (a different book) and put them to bed, then kept reading until I finished at around 3 am. I honestly meant to stop and go to bed and finish later on Sunday, but yes, there must be a spell on the book!

Didn't Ron mention a book like this in Chamber of Secrets? That there was a book that people could just not stop reading?

I loved it, but I would have liked a few more details on a few more characters in the last chapter - and what everyone is doing.

Cassie1686, Wikipedia has already posted the entire book synopsis, a list of who dies and by whom, and everything else you want to know.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Deathly_Hallows

But it's not a substitute for reading the book! I'm going to start rereading it today - a little slower pace this time - not such a rush to find out everything.

I deliberately did not take any orders for this past weekend so that I could read the book LOL!
I think I am having Harry Potter let-down. Not over the ending, just that the series has come to an end.

That was easily the best book of the series. I finished it last Thursday, couldn't wait and had to read the leaked version. Now I have the book so I can re-read less blurry icon_razz.gif

Can't wait until one of my daughters want a HP cake. It'll be tough deciding what I want to put on it!

I must be the oddest person in the world right now. I saw the first three movies but lost interest quickly in each of them, and I read, but have no interest in reading the books. Kudos to JK Rowling for creating a series that has brought a lot of people back to books-- but not me. =(

I have not read any of the HP books but I'm interested. I have 2 boys ages 7 & 5. Is the series apprpriate for kids this age? Please let me know what you think, if so I would like to read them with my kids.

Don't base reading the books on watching the movies. The books are fantastic. Actually the first 2 are a bit short and lacking but you need to read them to know the characters for the rest of the books. In fact it's better to read them a few times each to catch everything that is important later. Reading them as they've come out is a lot of fun, it's given us fans time to re-read and try to figure out what is coming next. She's a tricky writer and fun to guess.

5 and 7? I don't know. Mine are 2 and 4 and I wouldn't read it to them yet. 7 I would say yes, 5 probably not. Starting around book 4 they become quite a bit more adult books rather than kids.
Read them yourself first and judge. I've never met a person that didn't like them....that read them.

It's going to depend on your kids if they should be read it or not, mine don't get scared easily and I've started reading the series to my 4 year old. My 8 year old has been reading them on his own for 2 years and is working on the last book right now.

I got my book at 6:30 Saturday morning after driving 2 hours, took it to the hospital and tried to read with a MIL who wouldn't shut up, watched the parade with the kids and ran to a couple stores (was maybe 200 pages in when we left the hospital). Drove everyone home another 2 hours after they let my FIL out, got home about 4:30 in the afternoon and finished it about 10:20 that night. I wanted to go to sleep but my kid kept asking if I was going to finish the day I got it like I had promised a couple weeks ago. icon_rolleyes.gif

I loved it! I started a thread talking about the ending!

I think 5 & 7 years old may be a little early to start reading it - they deal with the death of Harry's parents in the very first book... but it depends on your kids. I think I might wait until kids were 8-10 years old. The books do start to get dark and deal with a lot of death and dark wizards and more adult themes like that.

My oldest started them at 8, quickly got him interested in reading! He is now 11 & started the 7th book at 10 p.m. Sunday, after I finished! He read all day yesterday, from noon to midnight, & will begin when he wakes this a.m. My 9 yo will get it after he's done, this one will be a little hard for him, but he'll do okay with it. My youngest is 6, going into 1st grade, he wants to start reading them, but he can't quite read that level yet!

vww104 - check with your child's school to see what reading level the books are as compared with your child's reading level. Otherwise, you could read them to him.

Anyone who hasn't read them, you should give them a shot. JK Rowling has such a gift for words & descriptions that bring you into the world she's created. I was a big reader until I had kids, then I didn't have time. The only 2 series of books that have captured my attention are the Left Behind & Harry Potter series. I'm sad that it's over, but I will read anything else that JKR writes.

I went all the way to London (I live in the Uk but it was still 2 1/2 hrs in the car) to get my book signed by jk Rowling at the natural history museum at 5.45 in the morning but the 2 hours waiting and no sleep was worth it. read it in the line, when i got home at 8- about 12 then fell asleep and read it from about 4.30 to 1.55am so probs managed it in around 14 hours. so sad its over icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I've just finished it!!! Loved the book and all the twists and turns. However, I would also have liked to have found out about what happened to other certain characters.

I have purposely been avoiding this thread as I was worried that things would be given away!!!! But I can read it now and talk Harry Potter!!!!!!! Hurrah!!!!!!

I think so, but I'm not one of those parents who fusses about these kinds of things. My kids are 8 & 5, and they LOVE Harry Potter. My son (the 5 year old) is too young for the books just because he's not old enough to sit still and absorb this level of material yet. But he loves the movies. My daughter started reading the books by herself this year in school and is currently halfway through the 5th book.

Yes, there are "mature" themes such as death, but death is a part of life and kids (IMO) do not need to be shielded from it. My daughter was 5 when one of our dogs died, so she learned very young what death was & that was not a concern of mine with these books. (remember, the ones we love never truly leave us icon_wink.gif )

My kids also don't scare easily & are aware of the fact that these movies are fiction. DD learned that at age 4 when she watched Lord of the Rings & had the whole darn thing memorized after several viewings. They know it's make believe, but I also know some children (friends of my kids) who got scared watching the 4th Harry Potter movie. So, like another person just said, you have to know your kids and what they can handle. I think your 7 year old would be ok with the books, but you'll probably have to wait a few years to read it to your younger one. But IMO, they'll both be ok with the movies.

Sounds like your kids are like mine with getting scared, my children started watching things like Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings when they were little. My 4 year old will tell you that stuff is just pretend, they love to pretend there are monsters and stuff but I don't get nightmares or anything.

The first couple movies should be fine for all kids, my nephew gets upset when he sees people get hurt and such and he can watch the first two.
