My 12 year old wants an Oriental theme party for her birthday the 30th of July. I am kinda lost for ideas for the cake...I have looked at a lot of dragons...but not too crazy about them. SHe was born in the year of the rooster..but I dont know...doesnt seem very girly or pretty . We are having a pool party and chinese lanterns hanging everywhere and fans..etc and small zen gardens for centerpieces...anyone have any ideas for inexpensive favors? original cake ideas? decorations? Any help is appreciated!

I'm not sure how you'd go about it, but what about making a 3D chinese lantern cake? I think the fan shaped cakes are beautiful too.

Yup,
At the chinese new year party my daughter went to, they all rec'd fans that had a message on them (double happiness/eternal prosperity etc..) Each mess. was only 3-4 symbols. You could write your birthday blessing in chinese symbols. LOL told ya I like details

You're welcome...one more idea...you said inexpensive favors...I'm not sure if you're going for chinese or japanese, but chinese have little red envelopes called 'red pockets' that they give as gifts on special occasions (pockets have $$)

Also, Oriental trading has really cute little oriental dress purses.

How about a kimono shaped cake? Chinese take out boxes with kiddy things inside for favors.

Maybe a garden on a square or rectangular cake? Fondant rocks and a Bonsai tree.
