I agree with you IHATEFONDANT, if I want a cake it has to have filling, usually when I make a carved cake (I'm doing one right now) I use Dulce de Leche filling, I love it, it has the consistency of stiff BC and it holds great.
Also I sent an e-mail asking about the spary stuff and also PM'ed Mary Alice, may be we are lucky and they answer!
Hey All! The sprayer thing duff was using on the Leno cake was is his favorite new tool that mike mccarey from mikes amazing cakes told him about - it's a preval brand sprayer and it's just an aeron sprayer with a little tube out the bottom and the bottom of it screws into a glass jar that you can fill with anything...we use vanilla vodka and luster dust for our sparkley sheen. duff got them at home depot in the paint department. Here's a link: http://www.prevalspraygun.com/
Hope this helps and hope you all have a spectacular weekend!

I loved last night's show. Duff was so good with the Brownies. Even though he had his big Jay Leno cake to prepare for, it really seemed like he spent a lot of time with them.
I loved that Duff tried using the Wood Graining tool. I have been wanting to try that. While he was trying, all I could think was that his chocolate seemed waaaaaaaaaaay to thick. No the coating he was putting on the tool, but the actual consistancy of the chocolate seemed too thick.
Now I want to see if it would work using thinner chocolate - like paint consistancy.

Thanks Mary Alice!!
Hey I thought the rose looked neat too - I've never seen that either.
Did anyone catch what the corn was made of? I thought they said cereal bars.... do you think they meant rice krispy treats?
Oh and did anyone see him try to use the wood grainer? I know I've seen someone on here do it - I'll have to look in my pictures - everyone was giving him a hard time at the shop for trying it but I know I've seen it work!!! Maybe I'll have to ask the CC'er to contact him and let him know how to use it on fondant I think they just painted it with food coloring/gel/paste and then rolled it over......they didn't try to use chocolate.....
Thank you so mucho Mary Alice!! I'm sure we'll take advantage of the information
Hey guys, I just did a quick search on Ebay and they have them, I just ordered mine!! I think that's a great alternative for the ones that don't own an airbrush!
Thanks Mary Alice! Just checked the link and that thing looks cool! The good part is I can always get dh to go to Home Depot lol.
I wondered the same thing about how the cakes tasted with no filling. The premade stuff doesn't really bother me too much. This question came to mind when I was watching the birthday cake surprise challenge. I wonder what that kid thought of eating that cake.
LOL I saw the wood cake picture and thought "oh wow a wooden cake, must be for a flooring store or something" So glad to see the finished product now I'm cracking up
I used the wood graining tool for home projects and I think that to use it with cakes you would use the same concept that for crafts, I usually prime or give a base color paint and then I use paint and glaze and add a second coat and while still wet i use the tool, so what I would do is kinda what Duff did yesterday, paint the fondant and then use the tool, I neves seen putting chocolate or anything on the tool, that's just my opinion and experience I may be wrong.
I'm really enjoying this show, first for the entertainment value, but also because I know alot of regular, non-cake decorators who also turn it on.
I think it is helping my business tremendously, because people see those cool fondant cakes, and then call us because we are the only company in my area who does them!
I liked the crab bucket...it was really cute. I always wondered if the woodgraining tool worked or not on fondant....I thought it might be better with a food coloring and vodka than chocolate. I'm also wondering if anyone dared eat the engine cake after the Leno show.
I finally got a chance to watch the show for the first time! I loved it!! My DH absolutely loves Duff's personality!! It wasn't until last night as we were watching that my DH reminded me that Duff was from a cake challenge that we watched sometime ago. And then to know he owns Charm City Cakes which is right in Baltimore!! How exciting!! They all did a wonderful job on the featured cakes. The Brownies that visited were too cute!
I ordered I couple at Ebay, but since I'm doing a cake this weekend for my MIL I'm going later to see if I can get one to use it on the cake!
MaryAlice..thanks for the info!!!
I enjoyed watching Duff with the kids. They responded well to him and I thought he was very much in his element, being such a big kid himself.
I do think that his staff deserve kudos as well. They are very talented!!
I am also shocked the his office manager still has hair on her head.
If I had to keep that crew in line, especially Duff, I would be bald headed by now.
That wood cake looks SO COOL !!
I want one of those wood grain tools REALLY BAD !!!
I think it's AWESOME that CHARM CITY CAKES watches our posts and this site and thanks, Mary Alice, for chiming in and answering about the tool !!
Hey, wouldn't it be just the neatest thing if Duff were scheduled to be at the CAKE CRUISE 2007 ???? Hint. Hint.
If you've ever looked at his website and read through all his flavor choices there's a lot that sound pretty tasty to me! We never know how his buttercream or cake is flavored just by watching so I am guessing it's usually something good. I do agree that sometimes fillings are nice, but I love cake because it tastes like cake. I think he's great and I love his childish humor/excitement.
I loved last nights show as well. I thought the whole Brownies segment was really cute. Duff was really good with them, and they were so cute. I was also wondering about that sprayer, so thanks Mary Alice!

I think he will go nuts around Halloween time.
I think it would be a scream if he could build a cake around a live person. Sorta like having the stripper jump out of the cake at a bachelor party.
Build something like Frankenstein, deliver it and just as the guests are going to enjoy some cake have the thing..."come to life"... ...lots of stress on the poor guy/gal inside the thing though.
I loved the show too! Someone mentioned the roses he made.....I tried them out today and they turned out fabulous! Sooooo simple to make and really pretty. I had been trying to master the fondant ribbon rose and like this so much better. Thanks Duff!
The tool for the corn was from the Wilton Ribbon cutter embosser set....
There is one piece that you can use to roll dots on and I say the tall guy pull it off the rod and roll it by hand...... pretty cool idea!
Okay I saw a portion of the fondant rose...but am not absolutely sure on the details...It looked like he took a round cutting tool, and pressed out three rounds of fondant, and then layed them out, but they were overlapping I think...did he just roll them from the bottom edge and pinch the ends to where it looked like a rose?
What a great company that they actually take the time to reply!

You are so right! For as much smack everyone here can talk about Duff and his crew, they are some of the most kind, patient and down to earth people I could ever *hope* to meet.
I know, when I PM'ed Mary Alice I wasn't sure if they would replay, but I was sooo happy when she did and so quick, when my DH came back from work I was with a big smile in my face and he asked me why I was so happy!

That's basically it. Overlap the rounds (he moistened the edges where they attach w/water), roll from one end to roll all of the rounds together. I pinched the end together and then 'pulled out' the petals to get them where I wanted them, and then let dry. They are really simple to make and look great!!!
Edited to say: I tried this with a 2 in. cutter and a 1&1/2 in. cutter and they both turned out nicely!
In all fairness I thought the kids did a nice job of decorating those cakes.
Six inches of BC..just my style!!!
