Hi Everybody,

I will try to keep this brief. I have been decorating cakes for a little over a year and been selling cakes for about a year. I have also been baking cakes for a local restaurant on an as needed basis. Recently, I was invited by the restaurant owner to participate in the local Chamber of Commerce Food Tasting Event. And I am the only baker, which is cool. So I have been working on dummy cakes, etc and planning how to serve cake samples to 300 people. In the meantime I have gotten a few cookie orders, which are big $$$ for me, so it got me thinking that I should think about Bridal Expos. So I called a local caterer who is holdng an annual bridal show in January. All I wanted was some info about the show, but it turns out they are in the process of looking for a new baker, they want to interview me. Now they haven't seen any of my work and I am nervous! I am feeling incredibly overwhelmed. Like most of you have have 3 young children and would love for my business to take off, but I am having cold feet. The caterer was asking questions like, what do I charge per slice. I told her I have been charging by the cake, what would a good starting price per slice be??? $2.00, $2.50?? Help! Am I ready for all of this!! icon_surprised.gif

Sorry, this is a bit long winded but I appreciate any and all feedback and the support!!! icon_smile.gif

Thanks all,
Amanda

I'm not even going to try to give you advice for your prices...I'll leave THAT to someone else here...I WILL however offer my congratulations to you! It sounds like things are REALLY taking off for you! How LUCKY! I'd LOVE to be in your shoes (though they'd probably be too big since I wear a mere size 4!!!...lol), but seriously, best of LUCK! Go with your good fortune, and ENJOY IT! You are blessed!

Yes, you are ready. You just have to keep telling yourself this. Don't let your fear of something new ruin your chance. I would jump at this opportunity in a heartbeat. If you don't you will regret it.

I am in somewhat the same position as you, in that my business seems to be taking off faster than I can fly, and I have a small child at home also! My advice to you is the same as my advice to myself: DON'T take on more than you can handle. Even if it means turning down something, it's not worth time with your family and so much extra stress. And price yourself what you are worth. Don't underprice just to get the job. I think at least $2.50, maybe $3.00, depending on prices in your area.

Best of luck with your cakes and your family!

I just checked out your cakes and you do an amazing job icon_smile.gif
I think you can definitely get $2.50 a slice. If you're more comfortable in the $2 to $2.50 range, why not go right down the middle and make it $2.25 icon_smile.gif

Good luck Good Luck! We're rooting for you! icon_biggrin.gif

You only live once so do what you love! As with most of us, if this venture is what you enjoy, brings happiness and peace into your sometimes crazy, hectic life GO FOR IT!!! I'm just assuming here icon_wink.gif

I too, have stumbled upon a business I just don't think I can pass up. It already has a good clientale, good location. So what's there to really think about icon_confused.gif New cake ideas, that's what icon_lol.gif

Most people only dream about having this kind of opportunity.

I wish you all the best, K'ly ^,,^
