Hello CC. I am going to be making a caek for my granddaughters birthday and she wants flamingo's I want to put them by a pond of water. I understand that I can use piping gel to make the water effect what I need to know is should I color the piping gel Also should I use a spatula to put my frosted cake or use a tip (if so what tip #). Any help is greatly appreciated this will be my first cake since finishing course one. Thaks
I would color the piping gel unless your frosting is going to be blue. You can apply it with a spatula or a tip. HTH
Yah, start with a base of blue icing, and make little swirl motions with a spatula to give the appearance of waves. Then paint on tinted swirls of piping gel.
When I made a swimming pool cake for my daughter( see my photos), I used a blue base icing and just spread the clear piping gel on the top. I used the spatula to make the gel look like waves.
I used blue tinted piping gel on top of white frosting. It gave the looks of waves. It is in my photos. It's the beach cake with the umbrella.
I iced my cake blue as well and then tinted the piping gel. You can see the waterslide cake in my photos. Hope this helps!
I tint my piping gel - a little goes a LONG way! and spread it with a spatula. My fish cake I just put it over blue icing.
Have fun!
I did the same as KrazyKross and it worked great and saved me a coloring step by using the white icing. My Dora cake with a lake and waterfall...Have fun!
have you thought about doing the jello thing???? You just carve out a hole in the shape of a pond that you want....doesn't have to be a deep hole.........maybe go down a 1/2 inch to an inch in the cake.......then frost the whole thing including the inside of the "pond" and then pour in some blue jello mixed to specifications and allow it to set up in the fridge and it looks like beautiful blue water!!! It takes good too.....( I think too much piping gel tastes yucky on a cake)
i also use piping gel, colored in blue. a little itty bitty of blue goes a long way. Mine always comes out way too dark. I also have a pic of a pool in my photos.
