You were thinking that you wanted the cake that was "in style" and popular at the time.

You think in 20 years, people aren't going to look at some of today's creations and think "what in the WORLD were they thinking!"?? icon_lol.gif

Can't we just learn from our mistakes in fashion from the 70's and let them die in peace? We just about destroyed the Ozone with all the AquaNet we used in the 80's - Stop the madness icon_razz.gif

I have seen some gorgeous cakes on this site using ruffle. I have clearly gotten that it is out of style and very disliked. So, are colored doiles out too?

I still like fountains. I like any fountain.

omg this thread is too funny Imagine in 20 yrs when the youguns lol look at the topsy turvy wedding cakes? I cringe now when I see them lol and talk about old becoming new

Cullotes , capris, in the 80's they were clam diggers and back in the 50's 60's they were called peddle pushers (like for bike riding) lmao now I'm showing my whole 50 yrs young. lol

ahhhhhhhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. This is just tooooo funny to me! I have to say, I had no idea about tuk-n-ruffle being out or in. But the staircases....oh my. Fountains, ummmm maybe. I'm 34 and I look at the staircases in the store and really wonder....is somebody using that? Yeah, I understand about trends, things going in and out of style...one day the crooked cake will look tacky to someone but don't know if the staircase can make a comeback. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif That's JMO (and I'm still laughing)

Had to share this .... a cake on a fountain with stairs that popped up on the home page this morning. Evidently these designs ARE still being ordered.

I think it looks great!

I had a shower cake for a lady doing a bridal for her niece who was 20 something... she insisited on a cake which probably was very in when she was married but I cringed thinking of this young girl haveing tuk n ruffle icon_smile.gif-in my pics its kristens bridal.
it turned out nice and she was probably the most difficult customer as far as as calling and calling and checking in etc - but in the long run she was pleased - so to each his own!!

Well, if Wilton is selling the ruffles then someone must be buying them...right?

They are still selling their nasty fondant too......so.....

And I'm in the same boat as some of you as far as the "I've got it hanging around in my closets" is concerned. ARRGGHH!! And I guess I'm such a "waste not want not" nut that I can't bring myself to toss it out!!

Great topic by the way.....I needed a good chuckle this morning!

Well now, maybe we're being too hasty here! (I also remember the plastic "greenery" they used to wrap around the bottom of fountains!)

Maybe we should have a Who Can be Most Creative with Tuc n Ruffle contest!

Lamp shades! Tu-tu's! Costumes for the pets! And -- it's waterproof! Do I hear showercurtain to die for?? Think embelished guttering around the house! I think hot glue, tuc n ruffle and flip flops spell total fashion!

Dust off those boxes!! And go girl go!!!

i know who still uses it. http://www.topsmarkets.com/shareddev/sharedcontent/Bakery/weddingcakes.cfm
my local grocery store. so here is another thing to say to people who scoff at our prices and say "i'll go to the supermarket" at get it for 10 cents.
umm... i love fountains. not so crazy about stairs. the cake in my gallery is my all time favorite i've done and it had both. and it was 2 years ago this week that i made it. and when i got married in 2001 i had stairs and a fountain too. some lady looked at the fountain and asked why anyone would put a fountain under a cake. i dislike her to this day. my dad (who made my cake) threatened to put little pigs in the fountain and make the water brown. i collected them at the time. funny but not dad.

Well I am going to be 55 and I really think the tuk n ruffle is so cheesy as well as the stairs with people and the fountains. These ( to me) are back country looking ( think hill folk...ie granny, jed and ellymae).

Yes things come back in style but not everything is worth coming back either.

I work cullottes, pedal pushers etc and now wear the capris. Bellbottoms to me suck as well as the hippie look. Never liked the 70's fashions when I was in the 70's and don't like it since it has revisited us. Some things need to stay in the past....cheesy unfortunately is alive and well... icon_lol.gif

This cake has tuk-n-ruffle and I think the cake is very pretty. I don't think the tuk-n-ruffle took away from it.

I read your post earlier today and had no idea what Tuk-n-ruffle was..SOOO...I did a yahoo search.. Most of the cakes I found I disliked the tuk-n-ruffle, but for some of the more childish cakes geared towards younger children, it looked pretty cute...I'm into more of the modern wedding cakes so I don't much care for the fountains and staircases!! IDK..I really don't think it looks THAT bad..I would probably use it for cakes I make for fun so I can take pictures and have somewhat of a decorative bottom just to add to my website, but I wouldn't use it for cakes that I sell, nor would I order a cake with tuk-n-ruffle.

Happy anniversary! My 11th was yesterday. And yes, there was ruffle around the base of my cake in 1996!!! Now I wouldn't dream of it. But then again, we had silk flowers too. Horrid.

just looking at the cake above...the tuk-n-ruffle wasn't even necessary and really not that noticeable under such a great cake. It doesn't take away from it but it doesn't add anything either. Cakes overall have become more sophisticated looking and plastic pieces such as stairs, etc. just don't look as good as most of us thought they did at one time. In the 80's I thought my teased hair and long bright shirt with geometric shapes and my skin tight stirrup pants looked good too....time has shown me how wrong I was...lol.

OK...I just found this thread and after working a 13 hour day, needed a laugh. This was a perfect fix. I am 66...been there done that. The tuk-n-ruffle always looked to me like using a plastic tablecloth. I can't stand them either. Don't take my buttercream away from me though.

Just remembered...there is one use for stairs that I truly love... the look of...a fellow CC'er...did a cake ( cannot remember or I would live credit) where the stairs make a bridge over the cake and she covers them with roses...it just looks like an arch of flowers over the cake,...doesnt even look like stairs...I think its pretty.

OMG Skin tight stirrup pants! I remember those! I had these great looking green ones. Yuk now. I have never used the ruffles and have always wondered where they come from. Not my cuppa tea. Keep a thing long enough and it comes back into vogue. Burnt orange patent leather shoes.... Oh don't get me started. Great thread and have had lots of laughs.

I'm 36, and the tuk n ruffle makes me want to take metamucil! It's antiquated! Old! Ancient! Dated! Done! Over!
(I'lll stop now)
And as for the fountain and staircases.....oh yeah......hate those too.
I think I'll invent a plastic elevator cake decoration and see if that sells.
Anyone interested?

Ok I think CC should do a "tacky cake" competition!! Give everyone a chance to use their old Tuk-n-ruffle.
Come ladies what do you think? Tease up our hair with a little aqua net, slap on some paste blue cream eyesadow and really try to make the tackiest cake possible...I am thinking one with a pinkflamingo with flashing lights for eyes on the top of mine... icon_lol.gif
OMG I could use some tuk-n-ruffle for a tu tu skirt on him icon_lol.gificon_confused.gificon_lol.gif
