Ok, I'm not officially a business. In fact I haven't even really sold any cakes. My sister's friend just ordered a cake, and it's my first cake order ever! I've only made cakes for family and friends, but everyone sells I should sell them.

I love baking and cake decorating, so I'd be happy to sell my cakes if people want to buy them! I'm not really advertising, but if people are interested, I like to have a website to refer them to so that they can look at my cakes. So here it is: www.freewebs.com/decadent_delights

My sister and I just brainstormed and came up with the name, but it's not set in stone. What do you think? If you have any suggestions for improvement, let me know. I won't be offended...I know it's far from perfect.

Thanks for looking!

Your website looks fantastic and so are your cakes!! Good Luck!!

Did you create this yourself? If so, how long did it take to put together and how difficult?

Your website looks great! The funny thing is when I went to your gallery, I recognized most of the cakes because they are already in my Favorites folder! Good luck, I hope you get a lot of cake requests.

your website looks great.... it simple and easy to navigate.

just one question- do you have a phone number that people can contact you at? i mean - i would rather talk to someone on the phone then by email.

i also noticed that you don't have anything about prices, do you plan on putting that in somewhere?

I liked your web site. The only thing I would change is putting on some prices. Other than that thought it was great.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! And thanks for the compliments too! icon_biggrin.gif Are there any cakes in the gallery that I should take out? I was especially questioning the yellow/orange cake with swirls...talk about the worst icing job ever! My sister thought it was cute though and said the most people don't even notice things like that.

I wasn't sure about whether or not I should include my phone number. But I think I probably should now. I don't have a business line (since I don't really have a business!), so would I list my home or cell? Is it ok if they get the voicemail and it's obviously just a personal phone line?

As far as prices, the main reason that I didn't include them is because I'm not a legal business...I wasn't sure if it was ok. The second reason is that I don't want to scare people off! I mean, if they're used to buying cakes at the grocery store, there might be a bit of sticker shock. Also, I usually use IMBC, and that's usually more expensive because of the ingredients. The last reason that I didn't include prices is because I'm still working on a price sheet!

For those of you who asked about making the website...it was super easy! I am no computer whiz and it's the first website I've ever done. I used freewebs.com, and I actually found it because I saw it recommended on this site so many times. They have a variety of templates for you to select. You just enter your text, and upload your pictures and that's about it! I don't know how long it took total, because I worked on it a little here and there. I'd say maybe a few hours total.

Thanks again everyone!

I thought your site looked great! Goodluck i starting yuor business, I am sure you will do great. I understand the pricing thing and scaring people, I think the same thing, they can go to the local grocery and buy a half sheet for 22 bucks and then it is alomost double what you wuld want, people will realize though once they taste the cake how worth it it is and all the work that went in to it. icon_smile.gif

I would suggest NOT putting prices on your website. I don't put them on mine because I think that encourages people to get in touch with me. I don't want someone to see my prices on a website and decide they don't want to go with me without ever even talking to me. Just something for you to think about! icon_smile.gif

Thanks erinkalins. For the lettering I usually cut out fondant using the script alphabet tappit cutter by FMM. I ordered mine from cakecraftshoppe.com. If you look a the cakes where I actually wrote with buttercream you'll see why I use it! My writing is atrocious! I've pretty much just given up on it!

The customer can still get (and most likely will) get sticker shock by contacting you directly for pricing. So you might as well be up front about it. To me, that means confidence in your work and that you are worth it. icon_biggrin.gif Dh and I are upfront kinda people...if we don't see prices we move along.

Your web site is a great starter. icon_smile.gif Is there anyway to get rid of the "Freeweb" thingy at the top of each page as well as the ads? The reason I'm asking is sometimes free web sites will place competitor's ads on your site and you have no say so over it.

Briansbaker:

Today was the first time I ever visited your site and when I clicked the link it took me to an ad for an internet service. I was stuck there for 10-15 seconds before I was forwarded to your site. Made me thind I was on the wrong site at first.

However, when I go back to your site, the ad no longer shows up.

IMO, I don't think it's a matter of not being upfront or having confidence in my work and knowing that I am worth it. I just don't think that publishing my prices on my website is something that I need to do. If you look at most of the "top" bakers in the country (i.e. Colette, Ron Ben Israel, Sylvia Weinstock, Elisa Strauss, etc.), they don't list their prices on their websites. I'm certainly not implying that my talents even come close to theirs, but I think they do it for the same reasons. If a potential customer wants to know their prices, they will get in touch with the baker. I just like to have the chance to actually talk to a potential customer (via phone or email) and then provide my prices, rather than have that person see my prices on my website and decide without ever even being in contact with me that they think my prices are too high. Plus, prices vary so much. My wedding cake prices depend on the flavor/filling/icing as well as the detail/intricacy of the decorations. I like to get an idea of what the person is looking for before I just spout off my prices. Again, this is only my opinion and what works best for me. Each baker does what works for him/her.

I luv your website and your cakes are beautiful! Good job! (Wow, I wish I knew how to do the filmstrip effect on the bottom like you did!)

The pros and cons of putting pricing on a website is a discussion I have frequently with other wedding vendors. It pretty much comes down to "whatever works for you".

Brides have told me that if a website does not have pricing, they are moving on. The purpose for their internet research is to get an idea of what things cost and how it will fit in their budget. They have told me "I am not going to be forced or tricked into calling someone. If they can't tell me their prices up front, then I'm moving on to someone who can." One bride told me "I look at it as 'why are they afraid to tell me what the price is?' " (One marketing person told me he referred to this as "used car salesman fear").

(My husband just bought a brand new pick up truck. He bought it from the car dealer who put the prices on the website. He researched a number of websites that didn't list the price and wanted to "force" him to contact them for pricing. His attitude was "I know what I'm willing to spend and I am not going thru the agony of listening to some car salesman try to "hook" me!")

Many vendors have told me that they are reluctant to post pricing because they have so many "bells and whistles" (my words, not theirs) that they need to know what a bride wants before they can give a price. I understand that. It works for them.

I post my prices. I do it as a pre-qualifier. When a bride sees my prices and what I offer, then know immediately if I fit into their budget or not. If my price is (for example) $2500 and mom and dad have said "$1000 .... period", then they are not going to call me. And that's ok with me. I want to spend my time with those who have decided, "Yep ... .those prices look ok. I can work with that." I'm halfway there at that point.

My pricing is unique in that I have flat pricing. I dont' have bells and whistles to add on. If I did, I might add a statement of "$xx.xx to $yy.yy, depending on actual requirements". I've factoring into my flat pricing what some might call the bells and whistles. Another wedding vendor I know actually lists on her website "things that will affect your price: headcount, types of foods, type of service, amount of decoration....". I like this statement ... it gives the client an idea of what will impact her cost so she can start thinking about it ahead of time.

Posting my pricing works for me. I want to pre-qualify the inquiries before they call me. If my prices are way outside of their budget, there is no way in the world that I will "talk them into" spending more than they have. Posting it on the website or telling them the price on the phone .... either it will work for them, or they will be "scared off" by the number.

If you want pricing on your website, perhaps you can list a price range, or post a price by the photo that says something like "This cake as shown, designed to serve 100, is priced at $xx.xx". Your disclaimer of "as shown" leaves you some leeway for variables the client may have, and showing the serving size gives them an idea of how big the cake really is (A price of $100 for cake to serve 50 will make sense to them, but if they look at the picture and can't tell it serves 50, then $100 may sound like a lot). Perhaps add a small marketing paragraph pointing out how your cakes are designed specifically for the client, are baked fresh to order, made from scratch, only the highest quality ingredients, etc.

After all of this, the best I can say is that you just need to do whatever works best for you, based on what you offer. thumbs_up.gif

yellowjacket- Your web site looks GREAT! I've been inspired. I'm gonna try and set up a very simple one. I just started selling my cakes. They aren't nearly as good as yours. I'm sure you'll do well! Thanks for your post. I'd never heard of freeweb and wondered about how to set up a web page.

Thanks everyone! I guess I'd better email the link to family and friends and tell them I'm open for business!

I do think putting prices on the website works for some people, and not for others. But I'll just leave it off my website for now. There are so many factors that go into my price, like type of cake, frosting, decorations, etc, that it could easily get confusing for people. It gets confusing for me! Also, since I'm new, I'm willing to sell my cakes for next to nothing right now. (For friends and family anyways.) Later I might say that prices start at so much per slice. I'll just have to figure out what that price is!

Making the website was fun. For those who asked about the scrolling pictures, I really liked that too. If you're using freewebs, when you make your photo page there is an option to select the album type. There are 3 choices, and one of them will give you the fils strip effect. If you're not using freewebs, I have no idea how to do it.

For the diamond pattern, I did use an impression mat. I still haven't perfected using it, but I really like the effect. The impression mat is made by Earlene, and you can get it from her website. You can also get if from cakecraftshoppe.com. I love CakeCraftShoppe. Their shipping is so low, and they have the best customer service ever.

Briansbaker - Our sites do look awfully similar! I wonder how that happenned! I think your site looks great. I love your saying about cheap cakes! I'll have to remember that. The only thing is that when I go to your site there is about a 10 second delay that shows an advertisement. It says that there is "high traffic". How long have you had your website with freewebs? It could be that they do that after so long unless you upgrade and pay the fee. The nice thing is that once I'm on your site there are no advertisements!

Thanks so much everyone!!!
