Did anyone see this on Sunday on Food Network? It was about a cake decorating mom.

It was really cute how she decorated with her son in the carrier on her back!

I'm just a buttercream girl for now, but her cakes were awesome! I didn't really like that show cake though, it was a lot different from her other cakes! That was brave of her to enter a competition so way over her head. I'm sure it was a huge learning experience, to say the least.

Just wondering what you all thought about it...

Yes, I saw it. I love her cakes too, but I was a little disappointed because they didn't really focus on the "how to" part of the business. Her success seems to really happen through her connections. I was really looking forward to getting some pointers.

I waited all day to watch the next food network star and the recipe for success program.Would you believe it? A power failure at 9:15 until 3:30am!

I missed most of the first show and all of the other one,not to mention it was about 87 degrees out and not a whisper of a breeze anywhere. icon_mad.gif

I was disappointed also in the way it seemed she was having success just by her connections. She has amazing talent!

That's true, there was really no business how-to at all.

I was also wondering how she worked out of her home kitchen. It didn't seem anything out of the ordinary. Maybe the laws in NY are pretty easy or something. I thought they might address that issue in the program, but they didn't. icon_sad.gif

I missed half of that show too and was disappointed b/c I really wanted to see it. I too wondered how she managed to run a business out of her home kitchen b/c NY State Health Dept. laws are probably the strictest. I wonder if she opened herself up to trouble by going on tv? Especially with a baby on her back, not exactly sanitary! icon_eek.gif

I was a bit dissappointed as well since it focused more on the connections that she had.....don't get me wrong, she is very talented but I wonder if she'd be doing as well had she not had the kind of connections that she did. I was hoping more for "how to get started" ideas.

I don't think that she could bake out of her home. She contracted a restaurant across the street to do it. Most of us don't have that kind of money when we are starting out and most of the joy is doing it ourselves, from start to finish. I wish that it had focused more on a cake decorator who is trying to get their foot in the door. I think that her cakes are gorgeous, but she has a lot of connections that most people don't have.

There is another one coming on this weekend (Sunday @ 10pm?), they are starting a bakery and maybe that one will give more hints and "how to's"

Ok ~ I missed it. Who is "she" and is there a website so we can check out her cakes?

I felt like 75% of the show was about her connections. Don't get me wrong, her cakes are gorgeous. However...I don't have friends that can get me a book deal and in a top magazine.

Also, the only reason why she went to Spoon is bc she realized she didn't have time to bake the cakes herself. At least that's what I gathered.

Thanks! I checked out her book at the library. One of them is in my gallery - my son and nephew wanted me to make it.
