icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I spent hours doing this cake (did a dummy 1. for practice and 2. her reception is open house style, so I stupidly thought she would like sheet cakes in the kitchen so that her guests could see her wedding cake and 3. I could enter it in the local fair this week, killing two birds with one stone!) but she just stopped in and saw it and did nothing but complain - the teal is too green and she wants a REAL cake at her reception, blah, blah, blah!!! I am near tears as I write this because I can't believe my own daughter has turned into my first bridezilla!! icon_mad.gif I told her, "Fine, I'll make another one!!" (As well as do 4 large sheet cakes). She left and I feel like the dirt she has just trod on!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

When you said what she told you I expected to see an amateur looking cake. But than my jaw dropped when I saw the beautiful cake you made her. What a beautiful perfectly detailed cake. I'm sure she's just stressed but jeez, send her to her room!! j/ icon_surprised.gif

re color -- looks good to me

my response to her -- ok miss smarty pants -- here's the fondant and the colors -- you color it!

----

tho' have to agree w/ her -- real cake so she can do the whole cuttin' the cake bit is nice.

-----

you can still put this one in the fair -- it is a great design concept.

Thanks for the support! Doug, I had planned on hiding a little 6" behind the dummy so that that they can cut it and feed each other for the pics! Now, it'a whole new cake that I will use BC on with fondant accents as most people won't eat fondant anyway, not even my Satin Ice!!! icon_cool.gif

Can't send her to her room! She moved out into an apartment this last weekend! Thank goodness!! thumbs_up.gif

I don't make Satin Ice - I buy it from Country Kitchens!
It taste great but is a bit expensive so I'm just going to use for accents on my second attempt at pleasing her!
ARGG!

Your cake is absolutely wonderful! I do feel your pain, though. When I did my first daughter's wedding cake, I made up a dummy for her, after having agonized for weeks over the design, shape, etc. She came to see it and told me that she'd changed her mind, didn't want square tiers, didn't want it to look like her dress, etc. This was after I'd already bought a bunch of square cake pans! What I made (see Cheryl's cake in my pictures) turned out fine, but it took a lot more of my time than originally planned. Luckily, my second daughter was much more laid back, just said she didn't care what it looked like, only wanted fresh fruit decorations.

I'm sure that whatever you end up doing will turn out magnificent icon_biggrin.gif

christeena ::I was also thinking of seeing a really beginner's cake........THIS IS SO AWESOME . Honey let me tell you, my very very first cake was my daughter's wedding cake and thank God she liked it but otherwise I really think I would have told her I am not doing this, go to a bakery and pay the money.
I know you took so much pride in doing it, but she seems to be acting like a BRAT (I'm sorry, I'm so upset for you) let her pay for a cake and then she will see what kind of cake she gets. I really feel for you...........but don't let this get to you. Your cake is beautiful.
Blessings

OK, I'm tired of kids today. literally.(mine in particular, today and just about every other day) We do so much for our kids and get what in return? A thanks mom? Anything? No! Tell her to go buy one beacause your going to win first place with this cake. It's gorgeous!!!!! BTW, I know you wouldn't tell her to buy one and actually mean it, but I'm afraid that she may be used to seeing such beautiful work from you, she may have turned into a cake snob. (not a bad thing to be). Good luck with the wedding and have a great time at the show.

and may change her mind?

I hope she appreciates all the hard work that you have put into making her cake perfect.

Good luck at the fair!!!

It's Just Gorgeous! Just like Doug said...you can still put this one into the fair....But would be nice to cut into a real cake....Although, I just finished a wedding cake and wish it were a dummy...it's kinda hot outside today. icon_smile.gif

That cake is gorgeous! A shoo-win at the fair. I love the colors!

Like others have said, she's stressing & taking it out on you. I'm sure she'll settle down. However, I think I would want a real cake at my reception, too. (Although, you could lacquer the whole thing & keep it forever!) Seriously, though, won't the fondant colors fade after a few days? Mine does, really bad! icon_redface.gif

she should be happy that you are even making her the cake!!! As a bride-to-be, i would love it if someone made my wedding cake for me (i'm making my own)...i'm assuming that b/c she is your daughter you aren't charging her for the cake, or charging her little to nothing for it...she should be grateful, not complaining about it. I think it look wonderful!!!

Your cake is beautiful...did she give you something to go by for color matching? My daughter is using the same color combination for her wedding in three weeks...but she's VERY BRIDEZILLA SPECIFIC about colors, so I have color swatches to match chocolate and aqua!

i would still put it in the fair. the brown and teal aren't colors i'd immeditely choose but i will say that you did a stunning job with the entire cake; including the colors icon_smile.gif so please dont take any of that wrong icon_smile.gif its a wonderful cake and like others said you did a fantastic jaw dropping job icon_smile.gif

we can teach our kids things but a sense of taste doesn't always get passed on in our generations icon_wink.gif

just know in your heart you did well.. not well- fantastic and thats what counts. it hurts more because it is our children who say this but i'm sure eventually she'll come to her senses and appreciate the true meaning behind doing a cake for her.

I was suprised to read the title coming from you because I LOVE your work. The cake is beautiful! Your daughter probably is under lots of stress and is taking it out on you. Make her the other wedding cake and just go with the bridzilla on this one because your the Mom (unfortunatly right now) Just whip something out with a simple design and say--I'm sorry, I just didn't have the time considering you didn't like the other one icon_twisted.gif (don't even level the cake just slap it together---just kidding) I know your work is wonderful and you want to do something special but considering your time crunch now I probably woudn't.

I like your cake and yes your daughter was rude to you but at the same time I can see her point of view, especially if she KNOWS that you're making the cake a dummy partly so it can be in the fair.

Well first of all I just want to say that I love your cake, it is beautiful! I think a dummy cake makes perfect sense, especially for Open house style, no one has to wait for the couple to cut the cake to eat cake! I made my sisters cake and made one tier real cake so they could do the traditional cutting of the cake, my sister was the one who wanted it that way and she very was happy about it. I am doing the same thing for a wedding cake in a couple of weeks for a friend of mine. I just thought I would let you know that I think a dummy cake makes sense and works great. Maybe your daughter just doesnt understand how it would work out. Or maybe you could just add another tier of real cake instead of one on the side, then it would be like she is cutting from the actual cake. I would really love to know how everything turns out!

I really think your daughter just needs to relax and realize this is a time for fun not for stressing! I remember how stressed I was for my wedding but then I realized I need to calm down and not worry about everything being perfect. After I realized that I was able to have fun and enjoy everything a lot more!

I have not read through each of these posts so this may have already been mentioned. But, did you and your daughter and her fiancee' sit down and discuss cakes, colors and designs? Or was this cake going to be a surprise for them using the color scheme they chose for the wedding? Your daughter could just be stressing and maybe she had something different in mind. But her reaction was one of a bratty little child, a young version of a Bridezilla. You all need to sit down and work this out so that everyone is happy, or if I were you I would walk away from doing any of the cakes and leave it up to the two of them to find a decorator who will do exactly what they want for the cake.

The cake is beautiful. One suggestion, don't know if its possible, but can you just do another tier, but put it on the bottom, then she can cut the cake and all, and you can still pull off the top layers for the fair.

Or you could make it a lady windermier(sp?) sytle, using real cake for the bottom and the fake for the top.

BTW: I really like the colors.

Thanks, everyone!!

a. Her dad and I are divorced (14 yrs. now) and he is not helping with the wedding! I'm doing it all!! I made over 200 invites and now I will make another cake! you are right, some of this is my fault for trying to be sensible and save myself time and money.

b. And we did not discuss the dummy cake option together. Fiance could care less. I just tried to match the colors in her invitation. Apparently, not successfully!

c. she is quite stressed (she's 24, moved into own place and wedding is Aug. 4th.

What bothered me the most was her approach. She could have said, " Gee, mom, I really appreciate the hard work that went into this but here is what I think..."! Instead it was just one complaint after another!!

I'm just going to get through the next 2 1/2 weeks and then take a vacation!!!
