I have to makes some roses for a wedding cake and I am making the roses out of fondant, I have been using to wilton gel colors, all I can find is the christmas red and burgandy, but it only makes either pink to a bit of red or more brownish red. I tried to paint them with red coloring but that just makes it to glossy and almost ceramic looking, any suggestions would be great thanks in advance

I made a 4th of July cake and used Wilton colors without any problem. The trick is that I used an entire bottle of color, No Taste Red Red to about 1/2 a batch of MMF. And don't forget to use gloves or you end up with red hands. HTH

I don't know if you're making MMF or not, but when making dark colors like that, it's SOOOOOO much easier to add it in when it's still in the "soupy" stage - before you add the powdered sugar. I had to do a wedding cake in April using a lot of red fondant, and it was a breeze to just add color to the soupy mixture until I got the shade I desired, and then knead in the sugar. It's a lot easier on your hands, and less time consuming, to do it like this. If you're just making a few roses and don't need a large batch, there is a recipe for a smaller batch of MMF (I got it from Wilton's forum - I don't know if there's one for the small batch on CC). Or you can knead it in like normal, if you really don't need a lot. It just takes a lot of the guesswork out of it too then having to add and knead, add and knead, until you finally added enough. Anyway, I haven't tried this with Wilton's red - I've done it before with Americolor's Super Red (which is awesome!) but that cake I used one called Chef Craft or something and it was called Chinese Red. I also do this when using black, although I make chocolate MMF first and then add the black to the soupy mixture - it works amazingly well and it tastes good!
Anyway, if you're not using MMF, I've heard of people adding in color to store bought fondant using a Kitchen Aid. I've never tried it, but it's an idea!
