Hi, I have someone who would like to order a beer can cake. I looked through the galleries here and found some great ones. She doesn't need it to serve a large amount of people, so I figured I'd make 3 - 6" rounds, cut in half and then stacked together. How much would you charge? My "normal" price for a two layer 6" with basic decorations would be $20, so I guess a 3 layer would be $30. Should I charge more for this type of cake? Also, the can would need to be silver, so I would be using a bit of luster dust if that makes a difference.
Here are some examples from this site:

Thanks!
More since it's a carved/specialty cake. I'm not sure what but $30 would be way underpriced and the luster dust adds to the cost. Is it going to be fondant? That ups the price too.
I know luster dust is pricey, but I'm just not sure how much to charge for the cake then. $5 more for luster dust?? I'm not doing it in fondant though. So what do you suggest for the price? $40? I've never done a "sculpted" cake, so I really have no idea what the normal price is.
3-d cake should be more. How are you going to do the label? BCT? or edible image?
something like this but on it's side? http://cakesbygraham.homestead.com/files/Beer_can_grooms_cake.jpg
I personally am starting a $50 min. for 3-d cakes. It's not the size of the servings. it's the art and decorating they are paying for.
And oh yeah, luster dust is expensive. do you have an airbrush to spray it on or you going to paint it on with a brush?
Depending on what exactly you have in mind...I wouldn't do it for less than $50. It sounds like this is your first time making this so you could charge a little less but make sure they understand they are getting a deal and other's will pay more. (personally I wouldn't do this but that's just me)
Can't wait to see what you do! : )
Keep in mind that you aren't just charging for the supplies...you are charging for your TIME!! And it does take alot of time away from your normal routine! Especially if you have a family!! Your time is definitely worth something! AND keep in mind too that you will most likely be delivering that cake! That cost a bit too....and fillings....I could go on!
Don't feel guilty for charging atleast $50...believe me, they will probably think that is cheap once they see the cake! Good Luck!
I say you multiply your cost of ingredients by 3 and add in what you want to make per hour.....so if the cake takes 8 dollars in ingredients 8x3=$24 plus 3 hrs. to make it..... @7 bucks an hour 7x3=21 you're talking a 45 dollar cake.......and I still think that's a steal
Ok, I think I'll charge her $40. Based on what you've all said, that's probably still too low. But it's my sister's friend, so I don't mind giving her a good deal.
For some reason, my links aren't going to the right cakes...that's weird. I'm attaching a picture of a similar cake.
okieinalaska, That's a really cool cake! Did you make that? What size is it?
Thanks everyone!
No, no no, I didn't make it. I just did a google image search for beer can cake, LOL.
You did a good job on your cake! : )
Oh gosh, I guess I didn't say it, but I didn't make that cake. I wish I had though! I really hate posting other people's work, and there's probably a rule against it, but the links didn't seem to be working.
My cake order is for Oct 4, but I'll definitely post a picture when I'm done!
