I have all three box (and the Dinner Doctoc one too). Honestly, most of the recipes in the cupcake book just don't appeal to me and I've only tried a couple of recipes out it so far. I love the chocolate cake book though. There are alot of great recipes in there. There is also some elpful information tables about using different types of pans for the recipes.

Bumpity bump....

Anyone try anything new lately ?

I made a raspberry Lemon Cake from the Duncan Hines Book and it was wonderful with just the right amount of tart from the lemon.

I lost my book when my waterheater flooded my bedroom, but I have tried a lot of recipes over the years. So please forgive me if I can't remember the names of the cakes.

There is one cake (chocolate covered cherry cake??) in which in the only ingredients are the cake mix, a can of cherry pie filling, and eggs. I LOVE this cake. I love experimenting with other combos also. I have tried lemon/blueberry filling, spice cake/apple filling, white/cherry filling, white/peach filling, butter pecan/peach, etc. Everyone should try it though it is one of the best in the book.

The hummingbird cake is out of this world. I think it's my favorite out of the book.

Darn Good Chocolate cake-excellent

Amazing German Chocolate Cake-You put the coconut icing in the cake mix. This cake is SOOO good! I actually prefer using the butter pecan cake mix over the chocolate mix.

Honeybun Cake-heavenly!

Lemon Lover's white chocolate cake-I am not sure if this is in the original book or not, but it was wonderful.

Chocolate cake with peppermint frosting(can't remember the name)-this was very popular when I took it to a picnic.

Almond Cream Cheese Pound Cake-great staple cake

Love CMD!!! All the cakes that I've tried so far (buttermilk devil's food, red velvet, buttermilk spice, sour cream yellow, sour cream white), have been delicious. I can't wait to try the hummingbird cake. Has anyone tried the triple-decker straw. cake on p.67? I'm going to try it next weekend.

I wanted to bump this thread and respond to the last question. I just made the triple layer strawberry cake for Easter. I used a white chocolate filling and my own buttercream recipe. I thought the cake was good, but not great, however, everyone raved over it and the leftovers were enthusiastically gobbled up by my coworkers today, all of whom said it was the bomb. I would just say to be careful of the baking time - I think I might have overcooked a bit, but the color of the cake makes it a hard to tell.

I tried it too this past weekend. I thought that it tasted great, but for some reason, my 10in round did not come out right (I tried it twice!!). The 6in & 8in came out perfect. I ended up making a yellow cake layer b/c the strawberry kept falling in the middle. I used cream cheese filling & bcd icing & everyone loved it.

Question: What brand box mix do y'all use? I've been a loyal DH user, but lately my cakes are coming out dry, even with doctoring. I know there has been some scuttlebut about DH changing their recipe and maybe that's it. So other than DH, what brands do y'all prefer?

I have had the same trouble-anybody know if DH has owned up to a change???
Also, I am interested in other cake mix brand reviews...

BTW, LOVE the original thread-it's a tough misson, but somebody needs to undertake it!!! Thanks for the sacrifice gilpnh icon_wink.gif

You guys are a scream, I had no idea when I did this a year or so ago that it would grow legs. My intentions were good, the Peppermint icing cake is still my favorite, however I don't need to tell you that "Life" took over and my mission got side tracked. This summer looks to settle way down for me and I really hope to spend gobs of time baking and decorating. Thanx for keeping it going, I intend to try some of the recipes others have posted so I may throw in my .02 worth.

Heather,

Thank you so much for starting this thread and sharing your experiences. It's been a fun read. I have the book and have just started experimenting myself with the basic recipes in the back. The problem is my hubby is not much on new, he likes simple cakes. But I just might surprise him one day!

Best wishes for you and your life challenges thrown your way. Hang in there! My condolences on the loss of your family members.

I made the "darn good chocolate cake" this weekend and it rocks! I filled it with my standby - vanilla pudding mix whipped up with 2 cups heavy cream - it was divine! The chocolate chips in the mix really added something. I frosted it with Julie's less sweet buttercream. Since the filling is also not too sweet, it was a really wonderful rich combination. The texture of the cake held up well to decorating (it is the baby shower cake in my gallery). icon_biggrin.gif

I just got this book and can't wait to try out some of the recipes! I was thinking about doing the chocolate kahlua cake for a party this weekend. Anyone tried this one???

I have tried a couple out of the cupcake book. The lemon poppyseed cheesecake muffins were a big hit! My family loved them. I also tried the sweet potato muffins and I thought they were very good (my family isn't much on sweet potatoes!) I also tried the cookie dough cupcakes. They didn't turn out very well for me (the dough didn't sink enough). I think it may have been me!

I can't believe I just found this thread either! I love just reading through her books! She has some great tips!

Please keep sharing everyone!

Okay - I just made the chocolate kahlua cake for a get together this weekend. It was great! The cake was moist, texture was good and I don't think the kahlua overpowered the cake at all. I also did the kahlua glaze and it was fantastic with the cake. Just enough sweet to make the flavor pop, but again, not overpowering. Now, which CMD cake to make next....hummm.... icon_biggrin.gif

Edited because I need spell check!

I revived this thread because I absolutely love this book! I bake the red velvet for a friend who absolutely raves about it. I also made the milk chocolate pound cake which was also good. I plan on making the lemon next week for my MIL's birthday.

Anyone else try any others?

I recently tried the Key Lime Pie cupcakes. They were great! I did not use coconut flavoring though. I used vanilla in the cupcakes and fresh lime juice in the meringue. I also made the cotton candy cupcakes. They were pretty good. Please keep us posted!!!

I baked the milk chocolate pound cake for a school function and it was delicious. I used one large plain hershey bar which was cheaper than buying 4 smaller bars. The result was excellent!

Wow, I just bought this book yesterday! What I like about is that the recipes are not intimidating at all! Even the novice baker can make these recipes.

I am going to make couple of the cakes and I will post my results.

I just made the Hummingbird Cake for Father's Day and everyone thought it was, by far, the best tasting cake yet! It was so moist and the cream cheese frosting was terrific. One note, though - the cakes didn't rise very much. I guess that's what happens when you add the banana and pineapple. But man, it was YUMMY!

I made Susan's Lemon Cake for my MIL's birthday. EVeryone liked it except my oldest son who likes nothing but chocolate. But the general consensus was 3.5 stars out of 4. I found that the glaze did not really need the lemon zest. My mom was looking through the book and wants the peaches and cream cake for her birthday next month.

The yellow cupcake recipe from the cupcake doctor book also looks yummy, I'll be trying that this week.
