OK.... my son is mentoring 2 boys at Outdoor Odyssey this week... I told him I would make each boy a birthday cake...wellllllll the one boy's birthday is this Saturday....ack....sooooooo ..his mom said he likes anything military... my problem is....he's going to be 12... that age I think is hard.... can't have the cake for too young a kid... nor too old...
Throw me some ideas.... I want to bake the cake Thursday... decorate it Friday.... and deliver it sometime Saturday after graduation from camp..... they are just having a small party...just their family.... sooooo HELP!!!!!
TIA

Didn't somebody just do a cake shaped like a tank here?
It came out very nice and I think it would be fine for a 12 year old.
It's kind of an aggressive idea, but you could make a sports ball cake w/ a cupcake on top to look like a bomb! (use black licorice for the wick) Just a thought
How about a bct emblem of his most favorite branch of military and add a couple of figures. Do rope borders in the colors.
Peg, I think it is time for me to go do something else for a while...I am absolutely cracking up over doing a "smiple" camo cake. Not laughing at you, but the word is so funny, maybe a combination of simple and plain? Lisa has a thing for combining words, I think you may have found a gem!
I think it was susanm23 who did the most recent tank cake! It did turn out nice! Janice
I also made a tank cake. it was A LOT of work, especially because I didn't know anything about cake decorating.
My hubby's grooms cake was tank related. I will attach a pic here. Maybe a little inspiration. The tanks were plastic. We still have them as a keepsake.
Or do you have the wilton "little hero" pan" you could make a little soldier
These are good so far.... I like simple...lol..... but sometimes simple takes some time to do....
Keep the ideas coming ladies....
TIA

You're right, 12 is a tough age! I like the idea of a hand grenade or bomb, with a candle for it's wick. You have to remember that kids that age think it is generally cool to blow things up. A BCT of an air missile, or maybe even just something like the Army's old logo "Be all that you can be" What about an army helmet w/camo? Good luck! I can't wait to see what you decide to go with!
Esther your cake looks yummy and those little tanks are really cute...they look very authentic!
This looks like a great place for kid's cakes! You can also sign up for email kid stuff and printable invitations! Cakes of all kinds! This one is a hummer:

A few pretty good ideas, maybe will help! Janice
i just did a tank cake and it for the most part was very easy. i really like the bomb idea and i think a 12 yr old would too. if you want some instructions on the tank i will gladly give them.
These are really getting good brainstorming ideas.....
I can't seem to go to the pages that are linked to veejaytx
I get page cannot be found....
I'm leaning towards something camoed.....I might make up a batch of mmf for this...
Thanks bunches everyone.... I love the brainstorming in here... You guys are just the best...

Omg, I so Need to get my Other puter back with all my cake pic's on it. I have a great cake that would work wonderfully for you. but let me see if I can explain it.
Bake a small batch of Brownies, To Crumble for your Hill
I went to Wal Mart. in the $1.00-$2.00 section, I got a bag of army men, it had Tanks in there.. then I made up some brown & Green Icing, Iced the cake brown, I took the Brownies and crumbled them for the hill in the middle of the cake.Took one of the flags out of the bag and stuck it in the hill , then I arranged the men in each corner of the cake, I also took one man and made him look like he was flaging the tank I then took some that lay down and put them on the sides of the top of the cake, Then I took my green Icing, with my Grass tip did Grass all over the entire top of the cake, to make it look as if the guys were walking/crawling through the high grass, I put some on the brownie hill too (grass that is). I also used the grass tip and put some brown grass in there. on the ends of the cake I had gotten in the pack,, these lil half circle wall type things, I put those on the cake board, with a man standing watch on each end with the Grass coming along the wall. It sounds like a LOT but the Great thing is you dont have to worry about the top being Perfectly smooth b/c your covering it with Grass. It was a Really Fun cake to do, I have had so many requests off of this cake, & It was a Grooms cake =0) He LOVED It. I should get my puter back today I will try to post the pic for you to see. Hopefully it will help you some=0)~Sweet~
SweetCreations I can't wait to see a picture of that cake. It sounds like it will look great! I hope you get your computer back soon!
you can make a cake and shape it to look like a shirt decorate it in camo and then in orange (orange and camo are all over the place in our stores right now) you could write GENERAL (kids name here) if you dont like the orange idea i have also seen lime green with the green camo.
Here's a new link for the helmet cake. www.birthdayexpress.com/. ../BirthdayCakes.asp
I don't know what is wrong with the other links, but I found them on Google Images and there were only about 2 pages. Sorry about that! Janice
I noticed what is happening lately with the links... if there is a space in the webpage address that you copy over, the site is not including that in the link and is putting it into your post as regular text
Example:
www.securecakestore.com/ acatalog/armyscene.jpg
there is a space between the first front slash and the 'a' in acatalog, so what is happening you will notice that the link is not all in pink and underlined. It could just be a system glitch.
I would recomend that if you see a link (it is pink in color with an underline under it) that is partially pink and then as some regular writing after that that looks like it should be part of the link, I would copy and paste the whole link in a new window, delete out the extra space in the address line, and then hit enter on your keyboard in order to look at it.
Or is a person is typing their post up and they see the issue with the link not working right, they should go back and edit their post so that they link works right.
www.securecakestore.com/acatalog/armyscene.jpg this would be the corrected link
No problem janice, i was able to use the new links....
I know I'll be doing something camo....just have to make up my mind which one to do...lol...
Thanks you wonderful bunch of talented people...
I just love the cake stuffings outta ya...lol

Here are the other two links again, hope they work this time. Janice
www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com Sign up here for emails, it is free, to get kids birthday. I especially like the special forces cake, the hummer!
www.securecakestore.com/ acatalog/Army_Scene.html
www.securecakestore.com/ acatalog/Army_Scene.html
See Janice how there is a space between the first forward slash ( / ) and the 'a' in "acatalog", it still won't work
Bad link: www.securecakestore.com/ acatalog/Army_Scene.html
Good link: www.securecakestore.com/acatalog/Army_Scene.html
The good link has the space removed.
