Do you ever feel like you are just not up to par when you go to an event and see someone elses cakes? Sometimes I feel like I should just stop making for others and just make for my family. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way at times?
Thanks

I feel that way every time I look at the pictures on this site. My mom always told me that there will always be someone better, sometimes I'm that someone and sometimes I'm not. Bottom line, you can't always be the best. I looked at your photos and you are great. I love you creativity and you have a lot of talent. As long as you do your best, you should never feel inadequate.

I just looked at your cakes, and I don't know how you could possibly feel inadequate. All of you cakes are great.
The best part is I have the very same Dora set to put on top of my nieces b/day cake later this month. I was wondering how to fis stars and the side of the cake. I hope you won't mind if I copy your idea! That is just what I had in mind, but couldn't picture it. Thanks!!! And hang in there, we all feel that way sometimes. But DON"T stop decorating! You are Too good to quit!

When don't I? LOL icon_razz.gif I'm kinda new in this area, and I see every cake as an opportunity to learn. I get down sometimes, but I always tell my kids that you don't get good at something unless you practice, so....

I know you are right but sometimes it is disheartening! I know the person who did this particular cake I was talking about has been doing it for years and I have only been at it for a short time. Btw thank you so much for the comment! I really appreciate that!
Thanks

I looked at your cakes, and they are great! Much better than any I've done! Just remember, there will always be someone that you think does it better, just look at the competitors on the Food Network Cake challenges! They are all exceptional but only one can win! And sometimes they have problems with their cakes, and they are on TV! The last one I saw for example Duff's cake fell apart before it even got to the table! And he's a professional! It happens to everyone once in a while! Keep your chin up, you're doing a great job, I hope I can do that well some day!

Oh, yes!! I do too! My hubby tells me I shouldn't try to do cakes, because I never do a good enough job to suit me. I'm always critical of them when I'm done. But other people love them. I have to remember it hasn't been quite a year since I finished my Wilton classes, although I've been baking and doing my own decorations for a lot of years. I'm having a blast making cakes for the grandchildren. That's why I took the classes. And they live 8 hours away! I have to pack everything up and trek cross country to make their birthday cakes, but it's worth it all when they come in and see it and say "Ma, it's bootiful!

It's that perfectionist in us. That's probably a good thing, because we are always learning and striving to do better. You do great work!!

I feel like that everytime I do a cake! I always see the errors, while everyone else sees what is good about it. I just looked at your cakes and you should not feel inadequate at all!! They are all gorgeous - you should be proud! I think all of us should feel we're not perfect at cake decorating - otherwise we might a get a big head and not try so hard to make them beautiful!

I think the question is what cake decorator is EVER happy with their work?? I for one know that every single cake I do I have a complaint about it .. although friends, families, and customers always think they look good .. I think thats just an effect of being a "cakerator" .. you always see your own flaws!

Whenever I watch the Oklahoma competition on the food channel, and they show the entries made by teenagers, I just feel like throwing up my hands and saying to myself, "who are you kidding to think you can do this?" My gosh, the talent in those entries and the FABULOUS pics I see on this site.....!!!! They just inspire me!

I always feel inadequate too, especially when I see my OWN pictures!.....Is it just me or do your cakes look better sitting on the kitchen counter than they do in photos!?! Whenever I upload my photos, I think 'hmmm, I remember you looking a lot nicer than that, you lopsided, bumpy little cake!'

Well first I have to say that YES I agree that my cakes look better before I see them in photos too. I guess when it's in a photo you can really look to see how many mistakes there are. I thought it was funny that someone else thought that too.

Now on to the question of feeling bad about your cakes. If you ever want to feel like you are so much better then someone just take a look at my cakes.

I know I don't do a good job but I do have a lot of fun doing them and I am hoping that someday I will get better. But if I don't I know I still had a lot of fun.

Amen!! I need to take some photography classes or something! I mean, I will have a cake that I think is the bees knees, then I look at the pic and I'm like, "well... um... it was better in person... honest!" I HATE THAT! (And why do they always look like they are falling over in the pix?!?!)

And yes, I get to feeling down on my talents too. Especially when I make a cake that just really stinks! It might be 'ok', but it's nowhere near as good as I could make it, then I start to wonder how good I really COULD have made it... perhaps I really do stink, but have had a few that turned out ok on accident...? AHHHHHH, I need chocolate now!! (One could drive oneself crazy if one were to listen to one's self doubts.) (Does anyone know what the heck I just said? hehehehehe)

Yes, as a matter of fact...I just felt this way this weekend! The deer cake in my photos would have been my first paid cake but I just couldn't bring myself to take money as I felt MORE than inadequate and SO inexperienced! But, I did learn a lot from the cake. My husband and kids had to hear me fret and worry about that cake all afternoon yesterday after delivery and my dear honey said...."Baby...look at it this way...you learn with every cake you do so you can expect to do better on every future cake." Gotta love those hubbies who are supportive! I guess that is how we have to look at our efforts....this is just a stepping stone to becoming better and better. REMEMBER: Those whose work makes us feel inadequate had to start somewhere also, just like us!

Anyway...your cakes are wonderful, and as someone has already posted in this thread...if you ever need to feel good about YOUR work, just take a peek at mine, and you will see how truly talented you really are. Keep on decorating! icon_wink.gif

Oh, geeeez--Y'all's cakes are really nice looking. Seriously--I can't BELIEVE y'all feel "inadequate" at ANY time!

It's funny though, that this thread should pop up today. I've been freakin' myself plum out all this week over the wedding cake I'm doing on Saturday! icon_cry.gificon_cry.giftapedshut.gificon_cry.gif

I've been reading, cramming, planning and BREATHING this cake! I know my husband is tired of hearing about cakes. And, well--I don't DARE mention it at work--it's another officer who's getting married!

I read on one website that "besides the bride and groom's pictures, the wedding cake is the most photographed and talked about item of the entire wedding..." AHHHHHHHHHH! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I take everything as a sign, too--old deep superstitions just built in, I reckon!

But, I guess I'll live through it, either way. And, you have to go by the understanding that other people will not see your mistakes like you do! (Or like the camera does--what IS that, anyway?!? icon_confused.gif )

Sometimes, though--I feel like even my best is NEVER enough.

First, your cakes are wonderful.

I always feel that way. I've never made a cake that I felt was just amazing. I always feel I can do something else or that someone else can do better. I love hearing people tell me they look good but it still never clicks in my brain. I know there is better talent everywhere and I just have to keep trying to be nearly as good as some people on CC or any other talent. Don't give up....your talent is to good.
