I am going to try making red icing for the first time. Any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated.
I've attempted before and usually ended up with some weird shade of dark pink.

Any product recommendations will be helpful also.

I will be using Antonia's icing if that matters. I love that recipe.

I want to be ready for the Holidays. icon_biggrin.gif

Here's a thread on making red fondant. Pretty much the same hints would apply to icing. Hope this helps!!

Cookiemookie,
I had a problem with Wilton's red icing color and I bought Americolor's red red icing and it was wonderful. I also go that dark pink shade. Also, as time passes, the color gets darker. So that helps.

cookiemookie - AMERICOLOR rocks! I would definitely suggest americolor red red or super red for all of your "red" decorating needs. icon_razz.gif I put three drops of it into antonia's icing (full batch) and it was red within seconds. Just like eromero said, the icing does get darker over time so if you want it darker just wait a little bit and check the icing again. Good luck and good riddance to dark pink icing! thumbs_up.gif
