I have to do a birthday cake for a grown, and gay man. I dont know him so I dont know if I should emphasize his sexual preference! I do NOT want to offend anyone and when I asked what they wanted for him they said....(the oh so infamous) whatever YOU want to do! AGH! Sorry just a little frustrated. I have NO ideas of what to do for this cake..ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks fellow CCer's.

I have a few gay friends and I don't think you should go with a "Gay" theme on your cake. When they emphasized that he was gay, they might just be pointing that a "manly" cake would not be needed. Just go with something that might emphasize his age or his interests - like you would any other person.

A basketweave cake with chocolate dipped strawberries on top always works for a guy.

I would ignore his sexual orientation, since it doesn't really matter, and they didn't specifically ask to have you address it. He is just a guy who gets an AWESOME cake for his birthday!

One of the lovely brown/blue cakes I have seen here would be great. The ones with the fondant circles? Cut off center? That looks really cool and modern, yet retro at the same time.

Otherwise, I would just treat it like a regular "guy" cake - not a lot of flowers, maybe chocolate icing with heavy borders or chocolate roses?

Not very helpful, but I wanted to respond, since it sounded urgent! icon_smile.gif

I agree, I wouldn't go with a gay theme unless they specifically requested it. Othewise go for a fun birthday cake that will bless him. I say have fun with it if you have the free reigns. Be sure to post pics of what you come up with.

I agree, I would definetly ask what his hobbies or interests are. Maybe he likes reading, movies, etc. and go with that theme. that way no one will be offended. make sure you post the finished product!!

I like the "blue" theme. Just keep it simple, modern, elegant (not girly). Good luck and post pictures when you are done!! thumbs_up.gif

I agree ...I don't think his sexual orientation should be involved unless asked ...I am sorry not to make fun of the situation or anything..but I am wondering who the hell asks you to make a cake ...and feels it proper to say...."Oh...and by the way he is GAY"????...lmaoooo....I mean if I was ordering a cake for a gay male friend, and didnt want a tool belt on it or a beer can...lol...I would say...he is a sophisticated type...or something...or just explain what I did want...I can see me ordering a cake...its for my friend...Pat and she something of a dominatrix!...

OK, maybe I'll get flamed here, but... did they tell he was gay when they ordered the cake? Or do you just know this because you know the guy?

If the people who ordered it said he was gay, that's just appalling to me... I mean, do you go up to people and say, "Hey, I'm straight and I want a birthday cake".

If they didn't tell you he was gay, but you just know that he is, WHY would you even consider a "gay" themed cake? Do you want a heterosexual cake just because you are heterosexual?

The ONLY thing that doesn't sound way offensive to me is if someone said, "Hey, it's my friend's bday and I would like to order him a naughty cake. Now, he's gay, so no girl stuff... ) or something like that... that's the ONLY scenario I can see that makes any sense to play up someone's sexual orientation.

OH MY GOSH! I know...they didn't ask me until two days ago and instead of asking me themselves they made my brother tell me because he is their coworker...And he said that they wanted me to know that he was gay and I was so confused...because I didnt know if they told me so I would use that or not...And I decided thats not cool becuase that should have nothing to do with it...I was really surprised! and confused icon_eek.gif

I agree. That is a weird thing to say when ordering a birthday cake.

Oh well!

Make him a super cake and laugh all the way to the bank! icon_smile.gif

lol it's just the way people think I am from Montreal you know the city that wants to be only french but it's heritage says otherwise. Well I was married to a french man and when we first met every time he introduced me he would say "she's english" even tho he knew that I am bilingual now my dh that I am married to now is "american" lol so everytime I introduce him I seem to find myself saying "he's american" lol I know it's stupid but people just seem to always say things like that "he's gay" they dont really mean anyting by it. So just go with a really great cake you would make for any man.

I agree with Darcat. A lot of people...even when they are "ok" with gay people still feel like they need to point it out. Its like when someone feels the need to mention someone is black.

It isn't right, but I think it comes from a lack of understanding. I know my gay friends would be offended and somewhat hurt. Being gay isnt what defines them ya know?

Maybe they told you purely to avoid the embarassment of a cake with bikini-clad gals, or something?

I agree! Just make something simple and elegant OR just make it a regular bday cake!
Good luck deciding!

oh get over the BLUE for men for pity sakes!!!

not all men like blue

ever notice how many men pick BLACK or RED or (ICK) YELLOW for their vehicles??

and I for one prefer PURPLE! (dang, so wanted to be born a royal!)

and -- let's face it --

tho' many think it's women who are the chocoholics --

men are too -- give me chocolate!

Doug you made me chuckle cause my dh's favourite color is purple and his sign is leo the lion (king of the jungle) lol so who knows maybe it's a thing men have that they would have liked to be royalty lmao

I love the marbled blue background for the message. Most gay men are not screaming queens like Jack from Will & Grace et al - I think he will love it!
