HELP!! I am making place cards for a wedding and I need to paint the border gold. I was told that all I needed is vodka and luster dust. I tried this and the "paint" globs up on the candy. I have to have a sample ready Thursday!!!
Hmm...the luster dust is so misleading. It does glob up when you mix it with the vodka (or extract). Your best bet, really, if you are going for a true "gold" look (like on stationery), is to use gold leaf powder, which can be mixed with a liqueur or clear extract. Hopefully someone else will have another suggestion for you!
I made tools for a grooms cake & I tried the same thing it was a disaster. I went to Michael's & got the color in the bottles. Can't remember what it was called. But I think it's for fondant. It works great on candy melts too. It just took a long time to dry. I don't know... maybe you shouldn't add anything to the luster dust? Would that work? Good luck~
Hey Gals...Thanks for the input. I gave up on the vodka and just dry brushed the gold on the border. MUCH better!! Hopefully someone else will benefit from this experience. This was my first posting on cakecentral...I LOVE IT!!
Yes, I make candy all the time using Luster Dust. I just dry brush it on for best results.
I use Lustre dust all the time with vodka or everclear and it works great. On chocolate though, it doesn't brush as easily. You might want to mix a little wiht some crisco to make a "wet" paint, then it might work better. Also, have you tried transfer sheets? The edible gold leaf is another suggestion, but usually between the painting techniques of liquid, crisco or airbrushing or just brushing the dust on it does the trick. You'll get different looks with all of them.
