Hi everyone!! I'm very new to this, and have been teaching myself decorating techniques. So far, I'm doing okay - I have not mastered any flowers, but I'm pretty good at piping and borders, stars, easy stuff like that so far.... icon_redface.gif
I need help b/c my first anniversary is Monday and I want to make a nice cake. I'm using a butter cake and want a good chocolate frosting. Probably an 8" layer cake filled w/icing. I would like a simple but elegant design for the top/side/whatever. Maybe fresh flowers w/monogram is easy??? I don't know, I hope someone can help though. icon_biggrin.gif

Hi and Welcome to CC! Happy anniversary! Are you making a scratch cake or a box mix? If you use fresh flowers don't stick them directly into the cake without putting them into flower spikes or straws or something to keep them fromcoming into direct contact with the cake (pesky pesticides). I have a cake in my pics that I did for my sister's anniversary that has a simple design and fresh flowers. I think it's toward the bottom of my page! It would look very pretty in chocolate. Lazy_Susan on here has a chocolate icing recipe that folks have raved about. I think it's in the recipe section-something like a bittersweet chocolate....not sure of the name!

Congrats on your 1st anniversary!

How about a simple piped border (shells, rosettes etc.) around the top and bottom of the cake with a single large rosette in the centre or some other pattern in the centre as you wish.

You can ice in chocolate BC and then do the borders/accents in a darker shade of chocolate or white BC for contrast (or flip the colours depending on which flavour(s) you like better).

Or another elegant option is to make a chocolate ganache, cover the entire cake with it and add some strawberries or chocolate curls. There are recipes for chocolate ganache on this website in the recipe section.

Cannot wait to see pictures of the finished cake.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

Dodi - I would love to make Sarah Phillips Ultimate Butter Cake but it depends on if my KA mixer comes in the mail before friday. If not, I'm gonna use a box mix with some extra stuff in it to make it good - from what I'm seeing on CC I will be using a Duncan Hines.

Random question.........what does DH stand for? Decorator's husband? Duncan Hines? Geez, it's driving me nuts here!

Anyway, I will be posting pics of my cake probably monday, so I will be sure to show you guys. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, on this board, DH could definitely be decorator's husband, although it usually refers to either Dear (or D@$N) Hubby (depending on what he's done!!!) or Duncan Hines. I think there's a post with all the abbreviations on the General Thread.

Happy Anniversary and don't forget to post pics of your cake!!!
