My son is in the marching band in high school and the parents always try to feed the kids before games. We usually get the meat donated and parents are responsible for desserts. We have 5 home games, so I was going to make a cake for every home game. I made a big bone for our first game and am going to make our marching band hat for home coming. I need to come up with something for our next home game, which is Sept. 15th. Our mascot is a bulldog and our colors are purple and gold and I wanted to try and keep it band related. This is my bone cake and everyone loved it. They put it on our website with my email address and I have received an order from it (you gotta love free advertising). I just wanted to see what suggestions everyone could come up with.

Does the band have a theme for this years half time show? If so you could do something related to that?

I think that is a cool idea. Way back when I was in the marching band, only the football team got the big meal before the game. We usually ate on our on. It's great that you are supporting your band, they work just as hard as the football players and cheerleaders!

Your bone is cute!

Can you do a FBCT of a bulldog? You could also do one with instruments and music notes.

How about a big drum with the bull dog jumping out of it.
A set of Marching boots.
Molded fondant band members marching across the field.
Musical notes

How about a note with a paw print as the note head? Something like below:

Everyone has such wonderful ideas.
4dollars: our theme is like some latin theme, I don't even think we have a name for our show. I totally agree that the band and color guard work just as hard as the football players & cheerleaders

deborah_amos: thanks for the compliment
I have never done fondant or any kind of transfers, guess I am just too scared, I have never even taken a class

TOMAY: I like the bulldog jumping out of the drum, but I have never tried fondant.....is it easy

ME2: love your idea, may have to try that soon

I love this bulldog and when I was pm'd the sketch, it was too light and I couldn't read them.....I would love to make this cake with maybe a band hat, but I can't figure it out, maybe some of you guys can

how about just the bulldog's head peeking out of the band hat. But just the head. Don't do the body, or do the whole dog. whatever is easiest lol. Or 3D dog - maybe teddy bear pan? playing drums.

A fairly easy cake to make is a drum.
You could also do a cake with musical instruments all over it, using the colors for your border icon_smile.gif

If your school has a fight song, you can do sheet music with part of the score. Little dog pawprints around the edge might be cute, too.

Everyone on this site is awesome, I think I have ideas for cakes for this year and next
I am partial to drums, because my son plays the tenors so that is probably what I will end up doing

redpanda: I love your idea, I may have to do that and even thow some flags on there to include the color guard

I forgot to mention that I was including them because they really get left out and my son's girlfriend is in there and belive me, they bust butt

ooooh now that IS a cute idea- I love the idea of paw prints around a cake period. I shall write that down in my 'idea' book (Which is so long now I'll have to live to 200 to make all these cakes LOL)

With regards to the sheet music, I did a cake for a Bar Mitzvah, where the theme was music. (The honoree is a percussionist--don't call him a drummer!) As a sort of a gag, I didn't include the name of the song that was excerpted on the cake.

It was funny to watch people with music-reading ability walk up, hum to themselves and smile when they figured out what the song was. ("Sunrise Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof)

Something similar would work quite well for a band crowd.
