This story is about a wedding cake. The decorator for the cake has only decorated one other cake. The bride was on a budget and couldn't afford the $300 or so for the correct round cakes, so the decorator cut square cakes into round cakes. The cake was to be three tiers with three layers filled each. The cost of the cake for the bride was only $87.
The day started out with the cake decorator realizing that the pilliars and plates that she thought were there, were not there. She ran to Wal-Mart and bought some figurines that had pilliars, she intended to cut the pilliars off the figurines. She cut the pilliars without a problem. She cut the cakes, without a problem. She fabricated plates for the two tiers. Not accounting for extra room for the buttercream icing on the sides.
The cake turned out very nice with simple lines and boarders and fresh flowers stuck into the front of the cake.
The person that picked up the cake liked it very much. They were instructed on how to assemble the cake back at the house.
Two hours later, we get a call, the back of the second tier has FALLEN OFF.
Well, this is where I come into the picture. Just one hour before the call, I had been promoted to cake decorator. I work at a major grocery store. I have never decorated a wedding cake before.
Anyway, since being crowned 'cake decorator'. It was my job to go and 'fix' the cake. I grabbed the tools that I needed and went to the house. I was led into a room full of people where the cake was set by itself on a veil of purple satin. They took me around to the back of the cake. They were right, about 1/4 of the back of the second tier fell off the rest of the cake. I was able to 'stick' it back onto the cake, and make it look decent. They had BBQ scewers stuck into the rest of the second tier to hold it together.
The second layer wasn't centered on top of the lower pilliars, I fixed that problem. The room was very stuffy and hot, I asked that a fan be placed in the room to help 'cool' the buttercream. At least two people bumped into the table while I was there, plus they let the large dog in the room. I didn't see a good outcome. I left the house with the acceptance of what I could do.
Two hours later, another call. The entire second tier cake has fallen apart, they want their money back.
So, my first day of cake decorator wasn't so good. But I like being cake decorator, so I'll learn from this and do just fine.

Sorry for the long story, this is my first day here. I'm sure all of you will be seeing me here a lot. Sorry, I don't have a picture.

Yeah, not your fault. Hugs to you though, you gave it your best shot! Especially since since it wasn't your mess to begin with. Who lets a dog in the room with a wedding cake?!? That's definitely asking for trouble. Better days are coming! icon_smile.gif

So, you weren't really the cake decorator, but the cake rescuer (well, you so tried to be!) and you tried!

Now you've got the bug and let's see some cakes!!!

Sorry to hear this happend to u! I agree, how can they let a dog near a cake, and a wedding cake to boot.

Im just a little confused. U said she couldnt afford round cakes so square ones was cut round instead. How is this a cheaper option?
sorry it might be a dumb ? icon_rolleyes.gif

I was trying to figure out the seame thing icon_lol.gif the only conclusion I Can come to is that the round cake pans she wanted would have had to be purchased by the decorator because she didnt have them. And the extra cost would have been added onto the cake? I find that a bit weird- while I am not in the actual business (financially) of cake decorating- I would think that most bakers have the standard sizes already and plus you will use the cake pans again so the one bride should not be responsible for the full cost of the pans. Anyway

Sorry to hear that this happened. Hope the actual decorator learns a lesson out of all this.

And who the heckkkkkkk brings a dog into a wedding hall? lol

Boy did you start off with a doozie of a problem. Congratulations for giving it your best and trying. Stay quitely away from the whole refund issue, the last thing you need is the stress of figuring that one out. Congratulations too on your promotion, and on your first post here on C.C. Looking forward to seeing your Pic's in the Gallery.

I can see why there was a dog there, as it sounds like it was someone's house, but THAT'S WHAT THE BACK YARD IS FOR!! Ha-ha! You poor thing, day one was not a rousing success, but you did your best, and, as someone already mentioned, at least this wasn't YOUR catastrophe. And yes, I am interested to know why on EARTH it would be cheaper to cut square cakes than to just bake round. I am sure they have the round pans at a grocery store... or was this some bizarre size? DO TELL!! And WELCOME to CC!! icon_biggrin.gif

Wow! What a tale! Was it a home baker that made the cake or a baker at your bakery? And what money did they want back? Did you have to charge to try to rescue the cake? The gall of some folks!

Sorry it has taken me so long to write back. I have been very busy.

The cake would have cost more if it was round because we would have had to order the cake from a supplier, instead of making it at the bakery.
We don't even make the cakes that are usually decorated, they come in as square 1/2 sheet cakes.
So, I hope that explains why the round would have cost more.

I am enjoying being the cake decorator. It is a very hard job to do though. Not only do I have to decorate for orders, but I have to decorate for the cases. I also have to make pies, cream puffs, whipped cream cakes, cake slices and a bunch of other items to be sold to the public.

I decorated a cake yesterday where I drew a horse freehand. The customer was very happy with it and said that she was going to tell all her friends about me. Oh no, more work icon_surprised.gificon_razz.gif

As soon as I am able to, I will post some pictures.

My sister is getting married March 10, 2007 and I have told her that I will make her cake.

Thanks for making me feel welcome.
