I have told my grandmother that I would make her a wedding cake for her gift since she said that they don't need a gift because they are going to have 2 of everything. I thought that I should give her something and that is why I offered this for her gift.

I have to travel out to Hamilton Ontario from Winnipeg Manitoba so I thought that I would bring the basics to bake and decorate the cake out there. I am not sure what to do for it since I am limited as to how much I could bring on the plane and what not.

She is having a light blue dress so that is going to be the color I thought that I would run with. I could really use some ideas please since this is going to be my first wedding cake that I will be doing also.

Thanks alot!!

I just think of Brush Embroidery all the way! So sweet and elegant - and grandma like! Especially with the light blue!

Whatever you choose - good luck! How fun!

Can't think of anything off hand but tell her I said, "You GO, GIRL!!!!"

I think that is wonderful.

omg...how SWEET!! 79 and getting married.....that's too precious. I would make something just very simple, yet elegant. The light blue would be a beautiful base color. Maybe add some pearls and do a quilted look?

Congrats to Gramma!!

I think of pearls and pretty bows and ribbons. I like the quilted pattern idea too.

Pearls were also the first thing that came to my mind; however, if she is getting married at 79 (I wish my 75-year-old grandma would find a 2nd love and get married!), she may be a really fun-loving woman and want something bold!! What style does she like?

I think something like FatandHappy's cake in her icon pic would be so sweet done in blue and white ... blue base, white lines. And of couse it can be as small as you need it. If you use square pans they will pack better. I think it is a great idea!

Here are my "tips" (having done a "distance cake" before)
1. Think through everything you would use for a cake and MAKE A LIST!! (Make a cake if you need to to actually see what you use)
2. Don't forget a spatula!!!
3. Buy anything you can when you get there (make sure you have a list for that as well.)
4. Have a ton of paper towels (becasue you never know what the sink situation will be.)
5. Use as few colors as possible and as few tips as you can. (A brush embroidery cake will only take two colors and two tips ... one to pipe and one to do the border ... DON"T forget about your border tip!!)
6. Think about an all white cake.
7. Fresh flowers are great ... or silk. I can't imagine royal icing flowers on a plane (I took mine in the car and was a wreck the whole way!) And, under pressure (or the gaze of family) making flower there can be a nightmare ... granted I don't know the situation.
8. Don't forget about the board, dowels, and pillars! (And the foil to cover the boards.)
9. Consider making the frosting ahead of time and putting it in your carry-on ... but only if it will be safe, cool, and extreamly well packaged.
10. Don't forget the spatula! (Or the cooling racks!!)

Ha! It sounds a bit daunting now ... but, I think you will have a great time and it will be a wonderful gift!

I did a cake for my 96 year old grandma and I decorated it with cornelli lace. She loved it.

Other ideas...since your using light blue, how about light blue fondant, then decorated with tiny white flowers (gumpaste), like little daisies. It will be pretty and light and elegant. Or do white fondant(that way you don't have to color the fondant) and light blue flowers.

I think there's something like that in the photo galleries.

And BTW, I think it's awesome too that she's getting married.

Thanks Pidge! icon_smile.gif

If you have the Wilton press set - that is a very easy cake to do and you only need 2 tip sizes to travel with.

can you take frosting on a plane, or is that a "liquid"...do they have that restriction in Canada?

I love the light blue color and brushed embroidery idea maybe do a little cornelli on the sides. Hamilton's a pretty large city so I dont think you'll have much of a problem finding stuff if you dont want to bring a lot with you. I think if you look around for a really nice topper that she can put on a shelf or table somewhere that it would be a nice souvenir/gift for her to keep.

I don't think that I could bring the icing on carry on but I could pack it it the suit case really well and take it that way.

Thank you so much for the ideas. I was thinking of doing white icing and daisy myself but I love all the ideas that you guys have given me. I do want to keep it simple since I am doing it at someone elses house and it is tough for me to do a cake somewhere else when you are so used to your own house and you know where everything is!

She is very excited about the big day. I am amazed at how many of my friends are shocked that she is getting married at 79! I was quite shocked when I heard the news but it is quite cool I think to find someone again to love even at that age!!

Thanks again for the ideas and if others have ideas keep them coming!!!

Everyone's suggestions sound really great so far. I don't have anything extra for you except that if you do forget anything, or need anything while you are in Hamilton, I am right next door in Oakville, so I could come to the rescue with cooling racks, forgotten colours and icing tips!! icon_biggrin.gif

I think that blue for the base would be good and then would it look ok to do white little daisies and then instead of yellow for the center of the flower putting a silver dragee. Would it be to early to start making the fondant daisies now or wait till closer to the date I am going out?

I just came across tutugirl's cake

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=720233

Wow! Now that is blue and white ... with a nod to maturity! (You could do daisies instead of the five petal flowers.) Anyway, just thought it was a gorgeous cake!

I think that fondant flowers can be done two weeks in advanced, but keep them out of direct light, and make sure they are in a cool place. (Oh, I love your thought of the silver dragees!)

Pidge, you are so right about that blue cake, it is beautiful!! Thanks also for the info on making the flowers. I will wait till a week or so before I leave if that is what I decide to do.

I love all the ideas that I am getting from everyone!! You are all awesome!! The more ideas the better!
