In Addition To Decorating...what Do You Do?
Business By jewelykaye Updated 1 Aug 2007 , 11:17am by fmcmulle
I am a high school math teacher, so I have summers off (which by the way is the only way to go!). I don't know how all of you who stay up until the wee hours of the morning do it. I just get frustrated and my cakes turn out terrible if I stay up late working. I am one of those that require at least 8 hours of sleep though. Those of you who do that and work and take care of kids are so impressive!
Hi Everyone, I work for the State doing Child Support Collections. I work Mon-Fri 8:30 to 5:15. The cakes I've made so far are for family and friendsand for the most part free, but I'm trying to find kitchen space to rent after hours so I can do advertising and get some paid orders. I want to have a little dessert shop some day. I have my eye on a perfect location although it's so rundown it needs major work to be able to have that kind of business in it. I'm oping to get a loan to cover renovation expenses and overhead for a few months to get everything going but not sure this is going to work out!!!
I have a not so fun full time job M-F, where I mostly daydream of being at home baking and one day owning my own shop.... I am a full time mom of one great son and I do cakes when I get the chance, not too many orders right now, but for some reason I have 3 due this weekend... So I've been busy this week. Weekends consist of "domestic duties", spending time with my son (when he's home) and trying new techniques.
Oh, and strating school this fall....
I am a mom of 3 girls (12 yr and 8 yr twins), all in basketball, softball, soccer......... I also own a small town floral shop in which my DH is installing a baking kitchen so that I can have yet another job, decorating cakes professionally. I have always had an intrest in decorating cakes and have NEVER purchased a birthday cake for my girls, I'm very excited! Except for the longer hours, but like swingme83, I have realized I NEED COFFEE!!!!!
Hey CakesbySandy - you and I could be good pals...the same thing would happen to me if I were to get creative at work!
I'm a CPA (audit, not tax), so about 8 months out of the year I'm working 55- to 70-hour weeks (yuck!). The summers are thankfully slower, with 40- to 45-hour weeks, so that's when I get to play around with cakes the most. Cakes are on evenings and weekends.
I teach full time (7th & 8th grade), coach basketball & am administrative asst. at our school. I opened up a shop with cakes & catering last June, and things have really taken off! I will soon be able to retire from my first profession & rely only on my business!
I am a stay at home Mommy of 4 (8, 6, 6, 3). I also do side jobs of party planning & photography. My passion is photography. My dream once all the kids are in school is to open my own studio. Some day!
Hi Everyone,
I am a SAHM to a 13 yr old dd and 8 yr old b/g twins. I babysit my nephew all day 2x a week, take my kids to piano, dance and baseball practice/games each once a week. I do my cakes on Fridays for the most part. I manange an online support group for women going through infertility issues. I am a coupon freak so I grocery shop a lot as well as just shopping for fun. I attend my cake club meetings and am the newsletter editor for the club as well as being on the planning and organizing committee for the next cake show. I help out when I can in my children's class rooms and volunteer to help with field trips. And I've played Bunco ( a dice game) with a group of friends once a month for the past 9 years. ( and all the normal cleaning and cooking stuff of daily life)
Oh, and I like to go lounge in our swimming pool! Woohoo!

Hello--
I am a full time mom to 14 yr old b/g twins, with a part time job (I'm a Pharmacist). My family is very active with church, attending Bible classes, Sunday services and various committee memberships--I run our Children's Worship services , Assistant VBS Director & Bible Bowl Coach. I work 2 days, 10 hrs/day each week, but I will fill in for other people's day off, vacations, sick calls, etc. I usually reserve Thurs & Fri for cake baking and decorating. I don't stay up late, but I will get up at 5am to finish a cake (I'm an early bird, not a late owl)
Wow!!! All I can say is WOW!!!
Y'all are all so impressive! This really makes me feel better about my schedule. It's still difficult but at least I don't feel crazy for doing it all!
Wow! you guys are quite impressive!
i work part time as an art teacher, full time as a mom to 3 beautiful and hilarious kids (well, 4 if you count the hubby) the oldest turned 5 in april. i also sponsor and after school art club and tutor during the school year as well. As an art major in college my main thing was pottery but now since i don't have much access to a studio food is my creative outlet. i LOVE to bake. you could tell by looking at me. I also abide by the "never trust a skinny cook" thing.
also right now, after i wrestle my kids into bed i'm addicted to the world series of pop culture on vh1. watching it now!
Wow lots of mommies of twins on here, hope I don't "catch" that from here like I did the CC'ing bug
I am a SAHfosterM of three kids, two teenagers and an 11mo old, plus my 18mo old daughter. I just had my kitchen licensed three weeks ago so am spending all of my "spare" (like I have any of that) time trying to get my business started.

Wow! You all are some serious multi-taskers! I work for my DH's family's business. They own a shoe and clothing store. We also operate several websites for online shopping. The lady who helps me with the online sales just quit so I have to pick up the slack for a while... We stay pretty busy with church activities including teaching class and helping to prepare the kids for a competition in Dallas every Easter. No kids yet, we've been trying 3 years now and I sooo ready! I just decorate for family and friends, but I am always in the kitchen!
Diet DP is my caffieine of choice!
Wow I need a nap reading how busy you people are. I'm a full time decorator in a dreaded grocery store bakery . I also do cakes at home and some balloon decorating.
I work full-time M-F as a program manager and instructional design consultant at a university. In addition, I am "on-call" for on-line support for faculty and students in the evenings and weekends, if I am home. Because of this on-call work, I do have a bit of flexibility with my at-work hours.
In addition, I have a 14 year old son and husband. This summer, a typical week day looks like this:
6 a.m. wake up and get ready for work/summer school
6:45 start nagging son to hurry up because we have to leave in 10 minutes
7 leave and pick up my son's best friend to drive them both to summer school at my university
7:45 drop them off and drive to the opposite side of campus where my office is
1 p.m. decide with my son whether he is going home with his friend or staying to do homework in the university library or hang out in my office to drive me crazy
5 p.m. leave work
5:45 arrive home, quick dinner, change into martial arts uniforms
7-8 black belt training class
8:30 back at home, shower, check homework
9 p.m. start nagging son to get ready for bed, do various chores
11 p.m. collapse
I only have a half day job and one child and cannot imagine how you all do it! I would love to stay at home and just decorate but I do love my job - secretary in a law firm and strange as it sounds I love typing too! You guys inspire me.
Holy cow!!!!!! Talk about needing coffee!!!! I need one now just by reading all these posts!!!!!
And I thought I was busy!!!!!!!
jenbenjr, I'm sooooo jealous!!!!! I wish I could quit my job and stay at home with my princesses...
Great thread!!!!!!!!!!
I am blessed to ba able to stay home with my three children (ages 6, 3 and 2). Sometimes I wish I still worked outside of the home , but know I am lucky to be able to stay home. Cakes have become an outside interest and creative outlet for me...two things I truly need.
OOO lets see. I am awake by 0530 everyday, get my son ready, me ready, drop my son off at daycare (he is 4). Go to work... work as a police dispatcher (which is where i am on cc all the time).
Then i come home from work, pick my son up, start dinner, husband comes home from work, leave my son with him. then i go to a friends house to help him( he had brain surgery), come home ...clean up from dinner, do a load of wash, start baking or take son to karate or go to a dr's appointment for myself (have cancer). give son a bath and then put him to bed. then i finsh my wash or cleaning, then decorate cakes or sometimes i just drop and fall asleep on the couch (too tired to move my neck at that point)
On the weekends i usually out in another 20-22 hrs workinig at the police dept.
BUT my son is such a beautiful child, and I would do anything for him!!!!!! he makes me smile.
Wow! we have some busy ladies!!
I work full-time as an xray tech at a local hospital, 4 or 5 days a week, with one night on call. (We call that our 30 hour shift. HEHE) I have an 18 year old son who is getting ready to go away to college and a DH.
I usually start my weekend baking on Thursday nite, then finish them up over the next 2 days. Most of my cakes are on weekends.
I can relate to being tired. You ladies with small children are my idols. I don't see how you do it. At least when I finish my cakes, I can fall into bed.
My plan is within a year or two, build a second kitchen and get legal for my cakes and catering. When we get DS through school, I would like to be able to do this full time. So I am trying to build my customer base right now, so maybe I can start making a profit sooner.
Susan
Okay - now I feel really bad. I just spent a whole evening complaining to my husband about how I never have time to do anything and now I read this!!! I only have 2 children aged 6 and 3 (and 3 dogs) and a small house to clean, but always seem overwhelmed. When I have a cake to do (or take time out to play on CC) I sit the kids in front of the TV, or I do it after they go to bed. Luckily I am not really busy with cakes, so their brains haven't started leaking out of their ears yet!!
Full time mom (plus full time job)
I work as a kitchen manager at an elementary school. Summer vacation YEAH!! I should be making cakes but honestly we just don't eat much cake around here. I have a wedding cake next week so it will be fun. I am really torn about my cake decorating. I would love to do more but am not quite brave enough to risk it as a full time thing. I wish the laws were different in good ol' Nebraska. I love my job and would hate to leave it. I like to do my cakes at home where I can spend time with my little one; if I had to go to a rented space I couldn't take him. Shooter is my number one priority...we waited and prayed too long for him; I am not going to miss one second more than I have to of his life.
I don't know how some of you work out of the house and keep up with anything else. If I ever get a job out of the house again, which I really hope never happens, I will definitely hire a housekeeper.
I have 3 kids (7, 4½ and 2) and babysit an 8 month old boy 2 days a week and a 20 month old girl once or twice a week. I am also the church's newsletter editor. If I have a cake to do, DH is really pretty good about keeping the kids busy or I do it after they go to bed.
Well, I am a full-time SQL Database Administrator. (read GEEK). I've worked with applications, databases, PC Hardware, etc...since I was 18...now 34.
I have 3 children (11, 7, and 4) and my wonderful DH who started a job with normal hours yesterday!!! Yay!!!!! (he's worked 2nd shift most of our 6.5 year marriage)
4am - wake, shower, dress, pack my bfst and lunch, make coffee, get kids up and dressed
6am - leave house
6:15am - drop off kids at DC
7am - get to work (45 minute drive)
3:30pm - Off work (45 minute drive home)
4:30pm - Pick up kids from Daycare
4:45pm - Get home, start dinner
6:30pm - Finish with dinner, dishes, and start load of laundry
7pm - water hanging pots outside (summer time)
7:30pm - 8pm workout
8pm - start cake projects...finish whenever..then bed and do it all over again
Sundays - I'm up at 5am to prepare worship order for both services at our Church. I run the audio/visual. (slides with song wording on overhead along with picture slides for different parts of worship assembly...like the prayer, communion, scripture quotes, etc...) I do this every-other Sunday. 1st Sunday of every month I run the toddler nursery area durring our second service. I am also in Secret Sister's and chair the Bkfst with Santa committee every year for over 200 children....
I am a clean fanatic...and my house is always spotless...people are always saying they don't know how I do it all...I say..."I'm Hyperactive"..LOL
I am a full time records assistant at a school for special needs kids. I have a thirteen yo DD who is into middle school sports and the band, so I'm Mom's taxi service. I am also a volunteer firefighter and EMT and teach CPR/First Aid for the Red Cross.
What a fun post! You are all amazing (especially those who mentioned "working out", whoa).
I am a mom of two girls 9 and 7 and work part-time as a medical social worker in the Childbirth Center and pediatric floor of our local hospital. I work a lot with drug effected babies, women who are victims of domestic violence, homeless women and families etc. It's very rewarding, but makes me want to come home and hug my hubby and girls. I have started to sell cakes on the side. Many days I wish I could start a bakery, but only part-time!
Cake Central has been such wonderful fun and support. Thanks to all. Cheryl
Well at the moment, i am a full time stay at home mom of a wonderful and very demanding two year old son.. did i mention beautiful??! Anyways, this is our last summer of freedom! In August i start graduate school working on my master's degree in speech pathology.. that in itself is a full time gig. I go to class all day on tuesdays and thursdays and am in clinic on mondays and wed. When i get home, its off to play with my son and cook/get ready for bed. When he goes to bed, its on to homework. We wake up and do it all over again. We are lucky to have an extended weekend as i have fridays off. My son's father and I rotate weekends with him, so when he is with me we usually try to find some activity to do. I don't do cakes on a regular basis, and when i do its hectic! I really don't know how you ladies do it.
