I've been making cakes for 12 years now . . . only for my kid's birthdays . . . they're not great, but they're mine and I'm usually pretty pleased with myself when I'm done. About 4 years ago I decided cake decorating stressed me out too much and that I was a perfectionist without the skill to back it up, lol. Sooo, I started simplifying my cakes and that's been working for me.
Well, apparently it took me about 4 years to forget all of the above because three days ago, I decided to make a Mad Hatter cake for my daughter's birthday . . . I went shopping, dropped a fortune on supplies, started my fondant, filling and icing two days ahead, spent a day baking cakes . . .. Then . . . . I started puting it together . . . OMG what a disaster. By the end of the night I was bawling. For the first time in 12 years, I had a cake I refused to take out in public.
He he . . . it looked like a two teired cake that had just started falling over. It was awful. My mom got up first thing in the morning and went to a baker and had one made for me.
aww..it probably wasn't as bad as you make it seem. We are our worst critics. I always think my cakes look horrible but then I get compliments and forget what I was stressing about.
Wow! I have never attempted one of those...I know I will probably never be able to do one. I have never done fondant either, too nervous. So, you have at least attempted things that others are too intimidated by! I'm sorry you were upset with the result. So, what did you do with it? I'm sure the cake was at least good even if you felt everything else was wasted. I think it takes a long time to master those cakes. I have looked at all the tutorials, definately too hard for me.
I think congrats for making the attempt. I bet if you try again you'll do much better. Keep it up!
It looked pretty bad . . . lol.
and yes, it was quite yummy, we came home from the birthday party and ate some
Isn't it supposed to look like it's falling over?
Theresa
yes . . . but it's supposed to be kind of an organized choas

Hey, isn't that any oxymoron; like "jumbo shrimp?"
Either way, I hope you try again. Don't let it beat ya!!!
I think perfectionism is not a complete bad thing when it comes to cakes. Are there any wilton classes that you can take? That would give you the skills to go with the eye for detail--which is a deadly combo in the cake world! Don't give up, it is easy to put too much pressure on when it is for somone important!

I am now taking Wilton Decorating Course I. Back to basics
