Just did a cake with piping on the sides. Had a very hard time getting the piping to look good. I had approximately 3" between points - was this too far apart? I had double piping and also had a hard time keeping the spacing consistant. Is there a secret to piping that i am not trying. I have heard corn syrup in the icing helps.

please lend your advice - thanks! Tom icon_smile.gif

Hello Tom, welcome to Cake Central!

Piping on the sides can be more difficult because of the angle, it might help to raise the cake up to eye level by stacking something under the cake, or even tilting the cake a little. Hope that makes sense...

Cornsyrup or possibly piping gel to make the icing flow better might help!

Three inches doesn't really sound too far apart, depending on the size of the cake. Did you mark the spaces somehow? I've seen paper cups cut to size and used as a template, or Wilton makes a tool for this.

Hope that helps a little! Janice

PS Your cakes in the gallery look great!

Wow Tom, Your Cakes look great! & there is a tool that you can use to help with your piping, but I have found that it can mess you up also, for it marks your icing with holes and you must be very careful not to BOBBLE when using it. or you may have to make tiny repairs. But I just LOVE Janices idea with the cups. Sounds like a great way to help. & she is right working on the sides of the cake its always a big help to have it at eye level. Good Luck!
