I need some help with BCTs; I have tried twice to do them, and was not pleased with the outcome. For some reason I can't get them to be flat on the cake, mine seem to jump out as in 3-D and sometimes I guess I didn't smooth it out correctly and you can see the actual rows where i piped in the color. I have a cake I need to do in two weeks with cowboy boots and hat, and I was thinking of making them out of BCTs. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

thanks,
nestle

Well, I did my first one last week and I can tell you what NOT to do!

Make sure your icing is runny enough or it will leave gaps on the outside... Make sure you look at the design and pipe the outline first... then I let that set up for a minute or two and then flooded with the background color. Make sure to smear a coat of
BC over the whole back to secure it and then I sort of gently pushed it into the cake before I removed the wax paper but it was melting QUICK!

Sorry I wasn't more help icon_sad.gif

I actually choose not to add the final layer of icing because it seems to make them so much thicker that they stick out on the cake mre than I like,.. I only do that if I plan to make the transfer the entire size and shape of the top of my cake.
I will use a toothpick to push the icing right up to the outline so that it fills in as much as possible..you can add extra to the area afterwards if you think it's too thin. I have a couple of bct's in my photos so you can see and get an idea.
I also keep the various icings/colors until the cake is done to make sure i have some in case touchup is needed...Once it's placed on the cake I will often smooth it with viva just as I do the cake itself

Thank you both cake diva and bklynsuze for all your input. I also thought that adding the last layer is what made my transfer stick out. The cake is for friday so hopefully i can upload the pictures soon!
