I have been playing with some ideas for some decorated cookies for Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) and I wanted to get some opinions please. I haven't made any cookies yet, so these are just photos from various places that I am looking at for ideas.
The main symbols for Rosh Hashanah are apples, honey, the shofar, and the phrase you will see on the shofar in the picture (L'Shanah Tovah- a good new year). I would really like to have the apple with honey on it, like the one in the photo, but I was thinking of maybe doing the shape of a half apple slice with honey on it, as opposed to a quarter like in the photo. But I also really like the beehive cookies and the idea of a shofar. I don't particularly like this shofar, but I haven't found a better picture that I could make into a cookie yet.
Which ideas do you like best or do you have other suggetions? I am open to making my own cutters. I would like to have at least 2 if not 3 different cookies.
Thanks,
Kathi
Okay, now 17 people have looked at this....are you telling me that NO ONE has an opinion at all???? You don't have to like them..that's an opinion, too!
Please, just give me some kind of feedback ,
Kathi
Hi Kathi,
I'm not sure if my opinion will help in any way, but here's what I think. I think that the pictures look great, and I checked out your other pictures so I know that you can make those cookies.
Unfortunately I cannot add anything inspiring as I know very little about the holiday. I celebrate regular old new years so I make things like fireworks and champagne glasses and stuff.
Good luck and let us know what you choose!
PS the butterfly cookies you made are too cute!
ok...I looked -- but not being Jewish --
all I can say is:
pretty.
(tho' agree -- the shofar could be better)
and for me, Pooh and his honey pot reads honey faster than the hive -- but Pooh seems a bit sacrilegious to use for Rosh Hashanah
your idea of the quarter apple would work too.
image that has a shofar that might be adapted:

note concept of honey jar in this image: http://honeyidf.org/flag.gif
might that work?
(just blundering around trying to help!)
What a great idea, Doug! The preschool wants to sell some as a fundraiser. Maybe I can adapt a pooh to be dipping his apple in honey. See, now the gears are moving. And, no it isn't sacriligious. Rosh Hashanah is about having a sweet new year and is the "light and joyful" day that precedes the serious 10 days of repentance before Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement.
Thanks, pidders. You don't really have to know anything about it, I just want opinions about the cookies themselves. Mostly the cookies would be for children, adults eat honey cakes, carrot cakes and apple tarts, etc.
Any other opinions or ideas are welcome!
Kathi
Hi, I celebrate the Jewish new year as well, (although I'm not Jewish) but I love the shofar and apple with honey idea. I'm not too crazy on the beehive, though, for some reason...but I think the other ones are good.
Jasmine
I like the shofar idea (but not the specific one, same as you) and the apple. I think half apples would be cute.
Doug's Pooh idea is adorable, and the kids (and their parents) would love them.

Okay, in the light of day I am wondering if this pooh idea is to labor intensive for me to charge enough to make a profit. What do you think?
I am posting a picture of a cake photo from the gallery that I modified into something I could turn into a cookie. It is a little simpler and I'd appreciate any feedback on that one.
Also, I decided that like most of you, I really like the honey jar idea more than the hive. I found this cool photo below and was wondering if it is possible to make a cookie that looks like this. Is there a clear glaze that I can put on my cookies that will dry hard? I'd love any thoughts on how to accomplish this effect.
Thanks,
Kathi
I agree. The Pooh would be too labor intensive. For the honey pot could you use a little bit of piping gel? I think it will dry hard enough if you don't make it too think. I could be wrong. HTH!

second pooh faster but not as cute as 1st one. tho' in 1st one -- ditch the little pile of apples and reduce the pot to one color.
consider doing apple as fondant cut outs; maybe honey pot also.
honey jar -- every recipe I know will be opaque to some degree and piping gel would be too messy.
so how about a standard icing that is tinted say a very pale blue used for top of jar w/ darker blue added for detail lines. the light blue would also outline the edge of cookie. then honey colored icing in the middle?
after all -- you do need to hide the color of the cookie otherwise have a brownish glass.
I do think the Pooh would be very cute, but would take up so much of your time. I like the whole apple with the honey better than the slice of apple.
The last Pooh picture might be workable. Very cute, and it incorporates all the elements!

I like the pooh with the honey pot. That might be too much work so maybe just do a honey pot like the one pooh is holding. I also like the idea of the half apple. Since these are for kids, maybe you could even do a tree shaped cookie with apples hanging on it.
You mentioned honey cake. I had that once at a friend's house and it was sooooooo good. I wish you lived closer so I could order one LOL
Check out Kneadacookie's wonderful cookies. She has a lemonade pitcher and glass that is fairly transparent. She uses Toba's icing. I bet you could get that "honey in the glass jar" effect.
Okay, one more idea....I think I like this one best. The pooh photo is based on a cake done by ziggyanne. I thought if I make them like a card, then I can put them in those boxes with the cellophane front.
Tell me what you think,
Kathi
And now off to bed. My husband is going to kill me for staying up so late again!!
are you trying to incorporate pooh with the apple and honey, or are you trying to incorporate the apple and honey with pooh. or....are you just trying to make one cookie with all the items together. not jewish...so i'm not sure about the holiday
Hi Dawn,
Apples and honey are two of the main symbols of the holiday. We dip the apple in the honey and ask G-d for a sweet new year. The preschool is interested in selling cookies as a fundraiser and I was having trouble finding ideas, but I thought Pooh (Doug's idea) dipping apples in honey was cute. When I saw the director at the school Friday she was talking about selling these as "gifts" to be given to relatives, etc., so I thought maybe designing it as an edible greeting card would work. The phrase at the top is a traditional greeting.
If you have any more basic ideas, that would be great. I'm still going to try to make a honey jar and a couple of apple ideas this week to see how these ideas look.
Hope that answers your question,
Kathi
i love the greeting card idea. Ican't really offer too much but I'm sure whatever you decide will be great.
are you going to be OK with selling a lic image such as POOH?
you can do so many other things..
A honey dipper
apples in various stages of cutting
honey jar
honey bees
you maybe able to get simple images for the above, so not only will they be more profitable but also less time consuming!
Oh....I forgot about the licensed image! I guess I can't do that! Shoot! Now I need to rethink this idea.
Thanks,
Kathi

wasn't trying to burst your bubble, but since I've been reading your posts, you seem to be a very upfront person and how kind you are to help.
Take care,
I'm sure that you will come up with some amazing ideas without Winnie..lol
Eggshells, I definitely appreciate the reminder. It was not on my radar screen at all!
Thanks,
Kathi
If you're going to sell them - I'd stay away from Pooh. The whole copyright issue and all...
