Ok, so I have been decorating cakes for about a year now. Just as a hobby for friends and family. My problem is that I am afraid to try different things. At the moment I am just using chocolate cake mix and White cake mix with french vanilla creamer added (which EVERYONE raves about). And I only use butter cream icing. I want to try new cake flavors and fillings but I don't know where to start. I see all these treads with all kinds of different flavor combos but it just make me nervous. Can anyone give me ideas of what flavors/fillings to begin with?

Thanks!

Start with what you like. Chocolate mint is yummy, Lemon cake is yummy, just go with what you know simple white or yellow cake with strawberry or raspberry is a huge seller for me ( especially in the summer).

Hope this helps

I love using pudding as a filler. I made one cake with ice cream topping hot fudge as the filling and everyone loved it. I also love stirring raspberry preserves into bc. It is yummy.

Thanks T. I read a posting yesterday that said to mix fruit fillings with butter cream. Any thought? I was thinking it might be good to start with that.

You know, I started out just using the basic box mixes. Then I picked up a book called "The Cake Doctor" and learned just a few things to make my cakes stand out! The number one thing I do is use real butter (melted) instead of the oil used in the recipes. Once I started doing that, everyone thought I was a scratch baker!

I would highly suggest trying the flavored creamers to spice up your box mixes. Just replace the water with the creamer, and add an extra egg. They are marvelous! HTH and Good Luck!

Thanks Everyone. I do add French Vanilla creamer to the white cake but what do you suggest for chocolate cake, would the french vanilla work? Again a bunch of flavors make me nervous. LOL, I know I'm insane!

for chocolate There is a creamer something like caramel toffee.... I think or butter toffee something like that and that goes well with chocolate tastes like a "Heath Bar" IMO.

Hazelnut is also good with chocolate.

And yes BC with strawberries and raspberries is YUMMY I made a cake last weekend with that as a filling.

make cupcakes and keep adding different things to your cake mix as you go on... taste them pick the ones you like.

Good Luck... Relax... and enjoy yourself....

Chocolate cake with rasberry perserves

Chocolate chip cake with Peanut butter buttercream

And any light cake with home made carmel and apple preserves - kind of like a giant carmel apple

I've used the coconut creamer in a lemon cake. I torted the cake to four layers and filled it with store bought lemon icing (shame on me!), iced with buttercream. It's the best cake I've ever made, and it doesn't taste like store bought icing either!

I am in the same boat... It seems my creative juices come to a screeching halt when talking cakes.... I cannot seem to get the idea of mixing flavors - cakes, fillings, frostings. I see where people are talking about adding creamers to the cake mixes and that does sound yummy. I normally use one of the Cake Mix Doctor's recipes which calls for 1 cup milk. Do you think you would substitute some of the milk with the creamer and, if so, how much do you think?

Wow, I like that idea about the flavored creamers...so you just substitute the water for creamer...but do yo have to add an extra egg? Someone mentioned that...

Coles supermarket sells these flavoured creamers (Coffeemate brand). However, they are in those little itty bitty one portion sealed cups so if you wanted to substitute with that, it would cost a bomb!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif Sometimes I am tempted to just try it just to find out if it is as yummy as it sounds.

Be aware that if you you replace ALL the water with creamer that your cake could very well sink in the middle. It's probably best to start with some creamer/some water until you figure out what works for you.

What flavor of creamer and filling would you use with a butter yellow mix and regular bc?
