I'm getting ready to make a frozen buttercream transfer for my son's cake. It will end up being around 9x12.
I've made FBCTs before but not this big. It's meant to be on top of an 11x15 cake.

Have any of you made a FBCT that big or bigger?
Do you have any pointers?

I made an 11 x 15. It's in my pics under the name "Stick people - Tree of Love". It was super easy. I iced the sides of the cake while my FBCT was in the freezer. Then when I flipped my FBCT on the cake all I had to do was blend the edge with the sides and add a border.

The reason I did a large one is because I didn't want the different "raised" pictures all over the cake. I thought, "why not try one big FBCT"? So I did and I'll definitley do it again. thumbs_up.gif

I made an 8x10 of Tux the Linux penguin for a grooms cake (in my pics). I just made sure I put on a nice thick layer of buttercream on the back when I was done so there wouldnt be any chance of it breaking when I peeled the paper off. I also left it in the freezer for a bout a week before I used it to make sure it was totally frozen solid. It turned out great.

Steady2Hands, that was the thought I had, make it bigger to cover the whole cake and avoid edges.
LNW, a Linux cake, how cute! My husband is a Linux fan. Good idea for a future celebration.
Thanks guys!

Well, it worked! I made the FBCT for the 11x15 cake, left it in the freezer for a week, and then used it on the cake. My son and his friends loved it.

I've been wondering, what consistancy of BC do you use? Thin, right? My first one was horrible and when I tried spreading the BC on the back of it it started pulling the 'picture' BC off. I supose I should have made it thinner??

Well, for the black outlines I cheated and used the black Wilton ready-made icing (put straight into a plastic bag not directly from the container). It's never given me any trouble. For the rest of the colors I used 1/2 butter 1/2 shortening using the Wilton class buttercream (1 cup fat, 1 lb of sugar, meringue powder, salt, water, vanilla), in the stiff consistency. I can't use all butter because my hands melt it too fast icon_biggrin.gif (hence the "stiff", thin would be all watery for me). But the FBCT tutorial recommends refraining from shortening because it may stick, so I compromised. I don't think I would do it in a thin consistency, maybe a medium. I did not really spread the BC, first I filled in the colors with tips 1, 2 and 3, and then kind of pushed them down with the spatula to set them. You are right, if you try to spread them, they will stick or pull up and mess up your image.
Do not use wax paper. Use parchment. And after I was done I left it in the fridge for a week, so it was really, really cold when I used it. Try to work as fast as you can after you get it out from the freezer (positioning, pulling the parchment off). The longer is out, the faster it begins to melt and stick. And don't touch it once it's on top of the cake.

Well, what I ment was when I spread the white icing on the back of it to match the icing on my cake, as the tutorial says to do, it started to pull up the icing that was making up my image. That's what I was wondering if it was thin.

No, it wasn't thin. It all came from the same batch. I added it (the matching one) with I think tip 2 or 3, kind of all over the design, and then very carefully push down, and when I spreaded it, I did it very softly.

It's so smooth! How do you keep from showing the lines where you piped in the icing?

I usually just transfer an outline to my cake and fill in right on the cake, but your transfer looks so neatly done I'll have to maybe try one sometime.

Well, the picture is hiding the imperfections. In some areas you can see the piping lines. I tried to push it down with the spatula gently to "erase" the lines, but it didn't do it 100%. Gives it a "whimsical" look. icon_biggrin.gif

I love your FBCT. I tried a 9 x 12 once and I had it too thin in one spot and it cracked, I've been afraid to do one that big since, you have given me hope.

I did a 12x18 Snow White -it was for a full sheet pan (16x24).

Make sure your outlines are not too thin- experiment using larger tips for your lines and fillings also, make sure it is PROPERLY FROZEN.

The hardest thing was turning it on to the cake- be OVERLY prepared for that part! you might have to do a little repair.

If you can do 2 images, do it! one might come out better than the other and that way you have a backup.

You'll be fine. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

ps
I have 1 lousy pix in my photos. I do have pic of her, however, everytime I try 2 upload my (any) pics I get a feed back that the file is should be ???in size- icon_mad.gificon_mad.gificon_mad.gif I still don't get it! if you pm me I will send to u.
