Hello Everyone,

My husband and I were in Michael's yesterday and he wanted to buy me the Wilton Tilting Cake Turntable (dear man) at first I said yes. But then when I saw the price $59.99 (of course I had my 40% coupon) I said no, I don't know if it is worth that kind of money. I thought I would but it out here and get everyone had to say. Thanks alot,

Sue

P.S. He bought me some pans. Gotta love him!!!! thumbs_up.gif

Hi,
I have one of those myself. I've been using it to decorate my cakes before it finally purchased the professional turntable. i've had no problem with it, i think it is definitely worth the money. I find being able to tilt the cake makes it much easier decorating the sides of the cake. Its very sturdy, however i wouldn't use it for tiered wedding cakes though (the reason i purchased the professional one). But its good.

Hi Marksgirl,
Thanks so much for posting this question...as there has been alot of controvery about this item. I personally LOVE my turntable. I originally purchased it (with a coupon) to help me making basketweave. I have used it with every cake I have decorated including a 1/2 sheet cake. Love the spin and tilt feature. Best of luck to you and welcome to your new addiction.

I agree with Samsgranny. I have had mine for about 3 years and it makes decorating easier, especially when working on the sides of cakes. Definitely worth the expense in my opinion.

First of all, you are so lucky to have a supportive husband! I love my turntable! It took a while to get used to lifting the cake off the turntable onto a serving stand, but it is a "piece of cake" now! One word of advice, make sure it is locked into position before you lift the turntable off of your work surface! (I speak from experience!)

Hold on to that coupon and go get it!

I wouldn't recommend it for frosting cakes. I prefer the professional one for that, but I like using it to decorate the sides of my cakes. It makes it much easier to do!!

The professional turntable? What's that? Is it from Wilton, too?

Hmmmmmm...... detective.gifdetective.gif

I've got the tilting turntable. Makes it much easier to drop strings, and do side work.

I don't care for mine. It wobbles to much. I think it's pretty cheeply made and for the money I would rather get a a nice sturdy one.

Going to Cake camp and hoping they have a nice one there to buy. I'm going to ask the pros I take my classes from which ones they use. I would bet my bottom dollar it's not the Wilton Tilting one made out of plastic.

Knox, Yes Wilton makes a metal turntable that is called a professional turntable. It is very sturdy and great for frosting and decorating too. If you only plan to buy one I would say to get this one, but the tilting one is nice for strings and intricate side work.

I had the tilting turntable but never felt it was sturdy enough for a multi-tiered cake -- I bought the Wilton professional turntable and LOVE it. The base is actually made of cast iron...it's heavy but ultra sturdy.

Thanks again thumbs_up.gif

I have to say that I do not like the tilting turntable. I find they are unstable and tend to wobble a little. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. The only thing I like to use it for is for topsy turvy cakes that have to be cut at an angle. Even then I'm a little leery of using it. Hope it goes better for you.

I really really want the Wilton Professional turntable, but am frustrated that none of my stores carry it. I am tempted to buy the tilted one just because I can use a coupon to purchase it, and since no one seems to carry it in stock i would have to order it online and pay shipping? Those of you who have it, is that what you did?

I took mine right back. It was a wobbly, cheaply made mess and it didn't spin properly. Also, this thing is $59.99 and it is all plastic! The Wilton professional ( or whatever they call it ) is cast iron-ish with a silver table and white base and rocks! It will last forever - costs the same and works better.

Also, when I want to do side-work, I put a non slip under the cake and roll up the non stick and put it under the base and it works like a charm...

Yes, it was right next to the tilting one so I took the other back and made them give me another coupon icon_cool.gif and then bought the iron one. My Michael's runs out of everything all the time so I think I got very lucky that it was there.

Some people here love theirs and swear by them! I wish mine HAD worked because it is a great idea - If they could make the metal one with a stable, tilting function, it would sell like hotcakes!

I guess I need to ask my Micheals then if they are just always out of the professional one or if they can order me one in....cause I would love to use the coupon for it!

I just bought the professional turntable and love it. I also have a wilton plastic one that is ok but not sturdy enough for large or stacked cakes. I only use it when I have to take a turntable to a decorating class because the professional one is so heavy. Michaels does carry the professional but it's not always in stock.

Professional turn table?? Where and how much does it cost? Also my Micheals also runs out of items or they just dont carry them. I have asked repeatidly(sic) for the petal and hex. pan sets that they have in the yearbooks but Micheals will not order them!! I asked them why they do not sell the items so that I can make the cakes in the yearbooks and they said it wasnt part of their order plan! Anyone else run into that at their Micheals?? I've run into the same issue at Michaels, Cheffie! They have a limited inventory and it seems sporadic -- I can't count on them having anything in stock when I need it. But they have that 40% coupon going for them...can't beat that discount!

I'm VERY fortunate to have a wonderful cake decorating supply store close by --- I've gotten to know the manager and she's wonderful about making special orders for anything I need (I've also called her for last minute disaster advice...she's awesome).

Ok, how do you guys get the coupon from Michael's? I know at Jo-Ann's you have to be on a mailing list to get their coupon - is it the same deal at Michael's?

the Michael's coupon is in their flyer, which comes in the newspaper. it may also be on their website. But, if you can't get ahold of one, you can use Joann's and AC Moore's coupons at Michael's...and vice versa...they all have 40% off coupons all the time. they don't really advertise that you can use other store's coupons, but they will accept them, no problem.

I have the wilton tilting - and am not thrilled. I agree that it does not seem to be well made, and I just do not trust it. I end up using the cheapo plastic on more.

JoanneK - I will look for you at cake camp - I will be able to recongize you now as the one looking UNDER the cakes icon_lol.gif

There is absolutely no way I would recommend that someone buy the tilting turntable. My daughter bought me one and I HATE it. For the price it should be much better quality.

Michael's coupons can only be found in their flyers. I checked the website.

if you don't use a tilting turntable, how do you decorate the sides?? that is one of my biggest issues!!

Put your turntable on a strip of non-slip and cut a round for the top of the turntable too... then take a long piece of that same non-slip and roll it up into a tight roll.... then lift up the table ( this is before you place the cake on icon_surprised.gif ) and have the front edge of your turntable rest at the halfway part of the roll and then you can put your cake on and spin carefully to decorate the sides.

I have used this method for basketweave as well as writing 'Happy Birthday' on the side of the cake and it has worked great!

sorry, cakediva, I think you already answered that. I will try it!

momof3boys, that is interesting. I've recently used the other stores' coupons at AC Moore and Joann's, but I guess Michael's doesn't do it anymore? Figures, since AC Moore and Joann's are a 1/2 hour away!

I swear, at Michaels, it depends on who you ask... one checker says they won't honor competitor coupons... then the next says no problem.. some will have you a Michaels 40% if you forgot it - others say that is against store policy.... this is all at the same store icon_eek.gif
