I just got back from the Sam's in Plano, TX (can't wait til the one in McKinney is done...almost) and was looking at their cakes (always do). The bakery manager was nearby so I just asked her if they sell the cakeboards.
She said, "Yes, but you have to buy them by the case of 50." I got her to price them for me, 50 1/2 sheet cakeboards for $8.12. I thought that was a deal so I got them.
I rarely do 1/2 sheets, but cut it in two and you have two 1/4 sheet boards, or cut into character pan shapes, circles, ovals, squares, whatever!
I think I'm set for a while....just wanted to share if anyone else was interested. They also sell white and colored buttercream but I have heard it's very sweet (you could mellow it out w/ some flour I bet).
Are these the plain boards or are they waxed? Did you pick them up in the bakery section?
I have tried to order boards before, but shipping is soooo high!! The next time I am in Lexington (I don't have a Sam's in my town), I will have to check it out!
Whoa - that is a great tip!! I will totally check that out the next time I get to go to a Sam's....no joke about the shipping costs - YIKES - although I did find someplace with free shipping - I googled 'cake boards' and their listing came up with "free shipping".
The great thing about Sams is that they will sell you anything they use in the bakery.Boxes,boards,frosting,filling and decorations.Just ask someone in the bakery they have a price list for everything. 
FIFTY of them for EIGHT dollars?!?!?! What is the quality like? That is a GREAT price!! I buy them at the store for four bucks for a pack of 6. Not a good price! Are the Sam's boards sturdy? Heck, even if you had to double up on 'em it's still a bargain! Bless you for this little tip!!
$8 is a great price. I called my local sam's last week after seeing a psot on here about the prices. They quoted me $23 for the 50 1/2 sheet boards and for the boxes{also 1/2 sheet} the tops were $17.78 and the bottoms were 16.36 for 50 of each. I'm still debating on getting either myself. They are still cheaper than the wilton! I had to pay $2.50 for a box from Michaels. 
Mac-that's a bummer! I've been to two different walmarts that have sold me stuff. The first time I tried from the one close to me, they said no, but next time the bakery manager was there and he got out the price sheet, sold it to me, and I haven't had any probs since. But I guess it just depends on the management. lol

I went to Hy-Vee one time and saw the cutest baby topper, I just HAD to have it. The girl working back there said they were $8, but I had to come get it when the manager was there. The next day I came back and the manager wasn't there, but the lady working said she could sell it to me but it was $15. UGH!! It was worth it though... so cute. I almost want to get pregnant just to use it!

I don't know about the boards, but I know by tops and bottoms she probably means these are 2 piece boxes. You can get one piece boxes that just fold and tuck, or two piece boxes where you can take the lid all the way off. With or without windows!
I should have worded that better. The cake boards were $23 just by themselves, for 50. Then the cake boxes were sold seperatley the tops were one price then you had to pay for a pack of the bottoms as well.

I don't know where you are, but at the one I work, we aren't allowed and don't have a item number for decorations...any of them. We sell everything else but the decorations and the plastic disposable bags. We do, however, sell the parchment triangles.
Hmmmm, I will look into that. We were told "absolutely not" on the decorations.
I will definitely have to check Sam's Club out. I purchased a case of (100) 10" cake boxes from my local paper company for $32.00. But I usually buy my 1/4 sheets from Michael's since I don't do as many. But now I think it would be much more cost efficient to purchase them from Sam's club in bulk since I live in Sam's Club anyway. It's our family hangout. Thanks for the tip!!
I am not sure about Sam's here but I know at both of our Wal-Marts I have asked them to seel me stuff and they said they were not allowed to sell anything in the bakery anymore other than the baked goods. I remember my mom used to buy platters and such from them all the time but no more. We do have a family owned grocery store here that sells everything just in case I get in a bind!!
I ended up being gone almost all day yesterday after my Sam's trip and subsequent post, so let me give you a few more details about the boards I bought. Hopefully this answers some of the questions I saw.
The boards are 13X19, with slightly scalloped edges that could easily be trimmed off if needed. The scallops actually look more wavy to me, not like the lace-printed board scallops that are smaller and more rounded. They do not appear to be waxed, and one side is white, the other is cardboard brown.
There's a big sticker on the package that says:

I am a cake decorater at wal-mart and we are not supposed to sell our cake boards and cake boxes to anyone..As a decorater I can't purchase them either. But our motto at Wal-Mart is to keep the customer happy..so if you complain to a assistant manager they will GIVE you the box and board for free..go figure. But we will sell the cake toppers for you for $5.00 which is cheaper than the local bakery supply store.
Do you have to have a Sam's card inorder to buy them?
