Hi everyone, I was searching the forum and don't remember seeing anything about the subject. But do anyone use flea markets or thrift stores for cake items?

I have found so many cake pans, old and new. Some are vintage, and it makes looking for these items so much fun. Also, with the many postings of cakes on stands and pedestals, and I have found some stands that gives some of my cakes a great platform. I have even tried small round cakes on broad candleholders.

I guess it's true when they say "One man's trash, is another man's treasure". Have a great holiday icon_smile.gif

I love my thrift store finds! My most recent was a ghost pan. I've gotten many character pans there. I found the insert to make checkerboard cakes. Cant' beat the prices, usually marked at $1.91. When ever I go - at least once every 2 weeks - I head straight back for the housewares section first!.
I got a great vintage cake stand for a few bucks. I gave it away as part of the cake I maded for a friend.

My family is at a thrift store about once a week. We love rummaging through things to find something we need or could use. I have found several cake pans at thrift stores or garage sales. I couldn't live with out thrift stores. thumbs_up.gif

I find lots of supplies at flea markets.

I know many decorators also find lots of things at yard sales. Lots of people take up decorating for a while and then give it up and sell it all at a yard sale. A few years ago a church friend said she had a couple of boxes that her daughter packed away that she was going to put out at a yard sale the next week, but she thought I might could use and brought them to me one Sunday morning. I thought it would just be more junk to accumulate at my house, but it was two huge boxes full of character pans, the largest sheet pans, the book pans, and I could go on and on! I was so excited!!

Where else are you going to find something that hasn't been made in 20 years?

EVERYONE has the new stuff - I want mine different.

I'm always looking for cake items at these places. Once I lucked up and got a
2 really huge boxes full of someone's grandmother cakes supplies at a flea market. You wouldn't believe what was in those boxes.

Just a couple of weeks ago, my best friend found a new 8" square pan that I needed for 50 cents at a garage sale!!! Needless to say, I'll be hitting more garage sales and thrift stores to feed my caking obsession!

ljdaa thank you so much for this post - I'm not sure why it never dawned on me to look at thrift stores, etc for cake stuff. I've seen stuff at yard sales, but that was before I got in to decorating. Well, I know what I'll be doing this weekend! LOL

While there dont forget to check out the books. I have found old copies of wilton and other books at thrift stores for pennies. I picked up a collete peters book for 50 cents once.

I go to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, and Ohio Thrift. There are a few other local "mom & pop" type that cater to other organizations. I hit them all! I started going to them when I lost 60 pounds and needed cheap clothes. I've been addicted since then. It is amazing what people donate - brand new, tags on, still in box, or only used slightly!
